Are sororities and fraternities allowed to discriminate?

How do Greeks get away with not integrating their membership? I had a talk today with a sorority girl from Bama, one on old row. She was honest enough to tell me that not one black was in her sorority and that none of the main sororities pledged black girls. When I was at Ole Miss it was the same way, shocker. I bet it is the same way at most SEC schools. While I was in school I never thought about it. Black people had their Greek orgs and a white people theirs. Churches are the same way. 11 o'clock on Sunday morning is the most segregated hour in America. How are these Greeks allowed to discriminate on public university campuses?

African Americans have a total separate Greek system... So they only pledge their frats

There are some organizations that have discrimination written into their bylaws. Pike and Kappa Alpha being the only two that I'm aware of.

ETA: My fraternity had 3 black guys, 2 Indians, and an Asian guy.

With the exception of the Spanish Church, most churches I've been to recently are fairly heterogenous based on population demographics.

However, I think you partially answered your own question: Blacks have their own orgs.

I guess this falls into the whole separate but equal basis.

He wasn't trying to link to discrimination. He was linking to their council.

It is one thing to say most are mostly white. It is another thing to say all of them are all white.

It's a private club. There are no goods or services sold. They can choose to affiliate with whomever they choose

But it is part of a public university... (At least at state schools)

True. I did know a black girl at LSU in a traditionally white sorority.

However, the way she dressed and acted allowed her to blend in.

I know a lot of this is ultimately about skin color, but I honestly think just as much of it is about cultural differences. Greek organizations tend to like conformity.

The Greeks at public universities are not part of a public university. They are private entities.

Do you think the Black Student Union is forced to accept whites?

This..i don't have a problem with black fraternities being exclusive to only black members..and any other race having their own rules. Who cares?
