Are Overprotective Mothers Making Their Children Sick?

The Secret Life of Dirt

quote:

For all the sophisticated analysis involved, the theory that Knip is testing couldn’t be more basic. He thinks the key difference between the two populations is...dirt. In a sense, he wonders if kids in Finland, and in the United States and other developed nations as well, are too clean for their own good.

The researcher believes there is a connection between autoimmune diseases and children's lack of contact with dirt.

One thing I'm thankful for about my 2year old is we have a dog. That negates mommies overprotective behavior

That's nothing new. Kids need to roll around in the dirt more.

You absolutely can. Doesn't mean you take a 3 week old to Wal Mart but you have to start exposing them. Slowly.

You are going to deal with copious amounts of snot, but do want to do that in a controlled way or during his/her entire kindergarten year.

Yes, Exposure to germs and bacteria build your immune system. I've never understood the people that need to use hand sanitizer everytime they touch anything. A little dirt or germs ain't gonna kill you.

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that kids who play outside build a higher tolerance.

I'm 24. We were some dirty frickers. Always playing in mud, rivers, woods, etc. our favorite thing to do was play in the flooded ditch with our action figures. Aside from one sore throat after a bad weekend of chain smoking, I've never been to the hospital or doctor for anything that wasn't physical or self inflicted. We ate boogers, mud, dirty candy and we are healthy as can be.

I think they are waiting too long to introduce foods and such and that's why allergies are so bad.

The article also cites a study that found that children in households with dogs had less allergies as an adult.

Yes. I've been saying this for years. Ignore all this anti-bacterial this and that. Let your kids drink from the hose. My GF gets sick all the time. Her dad is a doctor that is OCD about being clean and shite. Their whole family gets sick all the time. I grew up in Louisiana drinking from the hose and never wearing shoes all summer. Never get sick (although cancer will probably get me )

Overprotective Mothers
There was this woman with a baby down the street when I was a baby and she would surround the kid with pillows when she placed him on the floor, so when he'd fall over, he would be safe.. well, imagine a kid who never learns to put his hands down to brace himself... my Mom said the kid would fall, straight to his face when he was learning to walk.

And that's why I eat food off the floor. It's like push-ups for my immune system.

Sounds about right. Anymore you get two extremes with parents though. Ones that damn near wrap their kids in bubble wrap before they roll them out of the door and others who send their kids to school with shite like scabies because they're "too busy" to take them to the doctor. It's infuriating.
