Are online reviews out of control?

I Googled "tallest building in Atlanta" the other day, clicked on Maps, and the tallest building came up, along with about 20 Google reviews giving it a 3.9/5 rating. Who the hell reviews a building? "It was tall, great view, lots of offices. elevator was kind of slow though. 3 stars."
Everything has reviews now. Streets, parks, shopping centers, retail stores, even military bases (what does that even mean?). Not to mention the millions of restaurant reviews. Everybody is their own special critic.
On the one hand, they cause businesses to shape up and provide an overall more satisfactory experience for consumers. On the other hand, anyone can review anything, even leaving unwarranted bad reviews that could hurt a business. What say ye?

Well the fact that you can pay companies to post numerous favorable reviews about your product or company regardless of whether or not they actually have any experience with your product or company should tell you all you need to know.

Fake reviews are a big issue now. Sometimes they're obvious, but online reviews have to be looked at carefully now.

Good post. 4/5 stars.
ETA And an upvote.

Do a Google Maps search on "Poo Pond, Kandahar, Afghanistan" and read the reviews.

If only I would have seen this is 2010.

While my previous post is a joke, the upvote part is meant to point to what we do to rate things.
Everyone wants to think their opinion matters. Even if it is as simple as a binary up or down vote.

For the most part, only miserable arse people find the time to review places online.

Is the tallest building in Atlanta not the Westin Hotel? That could be why it has a rating?

I miss the old days when people wrote angry letters. You can really see the aggressive tone in a word when it's put to ink.

When looking at reviews I usually look at all the 1 and 2 star reviews to get an idea about a product or restaurant. If you see the same complaints over and over usually they're legit.

I can tell you that restaurant reviews are out of control. Instead of supplying an accurate review of an experience you get people trying to become the next great food critic when writing one. Or if they had a bad experience they pile embellishment and lies on top of the truth. I used to use them as a tool to find problems to address. It is pointless to do so since it is usually a very inaccurate portrayal of what happened.

I have this trash ball guy that works in the operations side of my company that makes it his business to post bitchy comments on his FB wall and tag ______ company in hopes that they give him free shite. Him and his wife do this at least once a week each. Very pathetic.

Yeah, you really can't trust them too much.
The 6.7 diesel, by all unbiased accounts, is about as bulletproof of a diesel engine as has ever been made. Yet because a landscaper has problems with one after 300K or some numbnuts runs gas through it and rusts out the fuel system, you'd think they were terrible.

Reviews are so uneven. People will give a product 1 star because it arrived damaged in the mail. This has nothing to do with the actual product.
Other people review stuff immediately after buying it giving it 5 stars because the person they bought it for said they love it. No description of how it actually functioned, or its lasting quality.
I'm not asking for consumer report level reviews, but I swear that mostly morons complete online reviews.

One thing I see, is someone with 1 review, who made an account just to write about their bad experience. And they say something like, "I've been going here for years, but after tonight, never again. 1 star."
You mean after all those years of eating there, you didn't feel compelled to write one good review, but after the one bad time you had, you made an account just to slam them? Miserable people.

No it's a Bank of America building. I guess people could be reviewing the bank they go to, but that's not much better than reviewing a building

Exactly! Go in a place 10 times and you're bound to have one bad experience. It is simple statistics that you are going to have a bad experience at some point. Online reviews should be a tool for businesses but now they are a weapon against. I wish there was a way to keep people from posting negative experiences if they didn't talk to a manager. A lot of the problems are simple fixes that could have been resolved had they spoken with management. They put more value in being able to go be an a-hole online.

I like online reviews. It holds companies MUCH more accountable regarding the quality of their product.
I don't have numbers, but I'd be willing to bet that the number of scammy and shitty products are at an all time low.
