I'm not sure if there are comparable vacuums at lower prices, but the Dyson Animal I have is the best I've ever owned. I've always had trouble getting up all the fur my lab sheds, especially on rugs, but this thing has zero problems getting it all up.

Our animal is badass as well. When my wife wanted to buy one I was a bit skeptic but compared to the shark we had that gave us nothing but problems, it has been maintenance free and picks up a shite ton more.

Have had two Dyson and now a Shark. Shark is every bit as good as the Dyson.

Yep the shark vacuums are legit at a fraction of the price. There is a reason they get good reviews they work exceptionally well.

This.

We've had some expensive ones but the Shark Navigator we have now is awesome. It was only around $120 and it never gets clogged. All of the others are terrible when it comes to pet hair and things like that.

I've got a Shark Rocket, and I love it:

It's a good bit cheaper than a Dyson. With that said, my mom has had the same Dyson for over 5 years now and it still works perfectly.

In a word, yes. Bought mine from Wal-Mart 7 or 8 years ago. Still runs like a champ.

We got a dyson when we lived in our townhouse. 3 floors and the top two were all carpet except for the laundry and bathrooms. Had pets that lived inside some, and it was great. Moved into our house 8 years ago and most of it is hardwoods. And the one carpeted room we have renovated so we didn't use it that much. I killed it vacuuming up dust and rubble from busted tiles and drywall. They're definitely not indestructible. I should have bought a new shop vac but I didn't think just some dust would kill it.

Kirby's weigh a bit more because they are made of metal and use a motor that will last decades with ease but they aren't heavy for a quality appliance.

I'll agree with this. My parents bought one when I was 6 or 7. I'm 29 now, yet it still runs perfectly, and trust me, my sister and I did not go easy on that thing as kids.

Only thing that went bad on it was the fabric that enclosed the bag around 3 years ago, and I think my sister ripped it on accident.

They are a bit heavy though, ours was probably in the 25-30 lbs range. I don't know that I would want to lug one up and down steps with my bad shoulder.

Get the Dyson ANIMAL for $600. That's the ticket!

Find someone in the janitorial business and get a commercial Windsor Sensor XP. They are super quiet and hold up to abuse, many hotels use them. Should run around $450.

Former owner of one of the ball Dysons. It sucked in a good way, but cheap plastic and electronics. Had a plastic part break that should not have been a big deal but the damn vac was built around it so I had to basically disassemble it to replace it. Also had a short in it, took it to a repair shop and the place was littered with them all waiting on the same repair. Replaced it with a $150 Shark and that thing is bullet proof.

We got a dyson with the ball thing a few months ago. Wife found one on amazon for 200 that was in the damaged inventory or something like that. Was new in the box with only a small hole in the box. It works very well.

I had the exact same thing happen. The little rubber ring that runs around the outside of the ball kept coming off and the ball wouldn't move with it off. This happened in the first month of owning it. Brought it back and got a shark.

I've had the Dyson Ball vacuum since 2007. House is all carpet except kitchen and bathrooms. Wife vacuums at least once a week. Never had any problems with it.

My house is mostly hardwood with 3 carpeted bedrooms. I've got an Oreck XL and bought the Dyson V6 handheld expecting to just use it for light clean ups. It ended up completely replacing the Oreck.

I've had a Dyson Animal for 4 years now. Always did an outstanding job, but it seemed to be losing suction the last time I used it.

Clean the air filter and wash the canister with a hose and let dry before re-assembly, if you haven't already of course.

One thing to add: with Dysons, you can find replacement parts online to do your own repairs pretty cheaply.

Bought a $79 Panasonic in 1997 that has insane sucking power. Still in use to this day for our cars. Would highly recommend on a budget if they are still as good.

Bought a Dyson about 10 years ago that hated at first (would pull out the Panasonic) but the cleaning lady used it and I eventually figured out how to pull it apart to clean it. I like how easy it is to take apart. It's OK but has never knocked my socks off. Still have to pull the roller out every year and cut out all the crap that gets wound around it.

Re Kirby: sorry your wife got fricked by a door to door salesman.

That's all I got to say except I need a small dustvac for all the damn ladybugs in our house and to go run over the pool table felt. Any suggestions?

Go on ebay. Get a D series Rainbow. They cost less than $150 although they are 25 years old.

However, you probably have a rainbow dealer in your neck of the woods. Drop it off, and they can replace belts and stuff. Got it done on mine for less than $50.

It will run FOREVER and be MUCH better than anything at walmart or target.
