Are barber shops dying off?

I recently had to find a new barber after my old one passed away. The new barber was talking about how young men don't get into the business any more.

Do you think barber shops will someday pass into history, or do you think we'll always have at least a few around?

It's like their equivalent to a redneck owning a fireworks stand.

Depending on where you live, there's sort of been a hipster resurgence. I can't stand getting my hair cut by anyone who's not a genuine barber.

The good ones will always be around. A barber shop is statistically one of the most fail safe businesses to start.

Haircuts, beard trimming, shoe shining, straight razor shaves (my personal favorite).

I'll brag on my local shop: Treadwell Barbershop

Every haircut I've gotten in the last few years has been from a woman or a gay male.

I can't think of a single place where a young straight male cuts hair except for maybe up in culchaville.

Pretty much.

My family owns a bunch of trade schools, one of them being a barber college. We get white barber shops begging for barbers that can cut straight hair.

Not a bad living if you can get in a good market. I know guys making $2k a week, but a lot of them are in the 1250-1750 range

Do the old barber shops still put the paper strip around your neck and use the vacuum to clean off hair clippings...?

Mine does the paper strip, but not the vacuum. They blow dry the hair off of you, but let it on the floor.

Every states regulations are different, but paper strip and smock are usually required.

supposed to use a brush, not a vacuum

Bocage Barber shop added some hipster barbers added with old school Dickie and Eddie.

Cedarcrest Barber Shop is old school Italian barbers. They I'm sure are having a field day discussing the Pita Pit basketball player episode.

I hope not. I want my hair cut by a barber who will talk sports and local gossip with me while he trims everything up. Plus, if you get the right barber, he'll press his boobs against you and it'll feel just like the chick that charges three times as much.

Well people are always going to need to get their hair cut, so no.

But it doesn't surprise me that less and less are choosing not to become barbers

I go to Floyds 99 in Dallas. They have about 10 regular hipster "hair cutters" (not sure what to call them) and 1 or 2 black barbers at each location. I used to go to the barbers when my beard was long. Really enjoyed the straight razors.

A barber shop would be an excellent business to start down here in south LA. I spent a few months in the Boston area and was recommended to a shop. $20 and it was the best haircut I had ever gotten. Someone who could actually cut a fade on the sides and trim my part in. No one does that down here, if I was young I'd be going to school and looking to opening a Men's barber shop. Where guys could get a haircut that was more than slapping a #2 hitting the sides and trimming a bit with the scissors.

I know it'll get labeled as hipster, but getting a part cut in and fading the sides is not a new haircut. It's a damn good haircut that been around for a while, but seems to be damn hard to find nowadays.

There are literally 292 barbershops in Louisville, KY.

Nobody should have an excuse to not be shitty sharp.
