Apple has added banners to its U.S. website, iTunes Store, and App Store encouraging customers to donate to the American Red Cross to help support people who have been affected by the widespread flooding in southern Louisiana.

Donation tiers available include $5, $10, $25, $50, $100 and $200, with all proceeds from donations sent to the American Red Cross. All transactions are processed as iTunes or App Store purchases.

Flooding in Louisiana, which started last week after torrential rainfall, have damaged more than 40,000 houses and left many thousands of people without homes. More than 20 parishes have been affected, and in many of the areas, flood insurance was not common because they weren't known flood zones. The Red Cross has called the Louisiana flooding the worst natural disaster in the United States since Hurricane Sandy.

Apple often puts out a call for donations for disaster relief. In the past, Apple has collected Red Cross iTunes donations for the 2016 fires in Alberta, the 2015 Nepal earthquake, the refugee and migration crisis in the Mediterranean sea, the 2013 Philippines typhoon, and more.

frick the Red Cross.

Find a local church or a S. Louisiana non-profit not ran by democrats and donate to them. Your money is more likely to be used for the purpose you intend it to that way.

This.

International and National charities are not to be trusted as there are shady issues surrounding them. Keep your charities local and limited to the area you seek to donate to and make sure they are legit.

The Red Cross fed thousands of families and had close to 100k volunteers during Katrina. Whatever you think about who runs the organization is irrelevant when folks have their homes underwater.

I've never really seen someone go after the Red Cross because of their politically affiliation but then again this is TD. Most of the criticism for the Red Cross stems from allegations that that they do much less work compared to the amount of money that they have/receive especially with the earthquake in Haiti. That being said any help is appreciated when you have nothing.

Nobody is suggesting that people should refuse aid from Red Cross. Any help is appreciated and hurting people will always take that. We're just saying that we feel like local and area specific charities are more trustworthy and more likely to make a difference than a large worldly organization that likely has people in it that are not in it for the right reasons or just plain incompetent and cannot get aid to the people who really need it fast enough.

I don't blame people for donating to Red Cross. Obviously they have a different trust level and that's their prerogative. But nothing wrong with being careful and safe with sure things you know for a fact that they will do what you feel they will do.

If tons and tons of evidence is paranoid, sign me up. It used to be a great organization, but undeniably has had a ton of issues recently.

NPR and ProRublica Joint Report

I know NPR skews right and all of that, so yep definitely it's hated because of all the bias on this website.

Man, there's gonna be corruption in everything. I agree you probably aren't seeing but less than 10% of what you donate to the red cross being used, but I sure as hell wouldn't trust modern day religion with my money either.

Only the biggest most succesful scam to ever take place in the history of mankind.

My Dad is a volunteer with the Red Cross and is down there staying up nights doing the night shift at a shelter and then working days helping clean stuff out of homes. He is getting about 3-4 hours of sleep a day. The organization might not spend the money wisely but the people associated with it are some of the first ones there trying to help. What a horrible organization to get volunteers from across the country the come in and help. What a bunch of assholes.

I would encourage you to learn more about them and their network. Yes, in the immediacy after an event the local effort is quicker to popup due to manpower and the fact that the have facilities and people already in all of the impacted areas, but long term the Red Cross will be a main driver of support and care.

I'll say it again.....Red Cross is a-ok in my book. And for people not living in LA.....well it's more difficult for them to know which local LA charities are trustworthy. Red Cross makes it easy for people to donate.

Like I posted in another thread.....they were there as my parents watched their home burning in 2008 and immediately gave my dad a $500 visa gift card to be able to get a hotel room and some basic personal items for everyone.

No other local charity was there to offer support that quickly.

I made my donation to the church that I used to attend in BR. I knew that they'll use it well.

But people from other parts of the country wouldn't have the foggiest notion of where to donate, so they're going to pick a national charity like the Red Cross. Likewise, a company like Apple is going to pick a charity that is well known.

Local organizations don't have the scale to handle these events so the national charities are needed. Even if it was 50 cents on the dollar coming from some guy in Iowa hitting a button on his phone, it helps because he would not take the time or effort to find a local charity.
