I have an 11 year old dog who has terrible skin and allergies. He chews and scratches himself raw constantly. I've tried every hypoallergenic dog food out there, but the only thing that has ever helped him has been steroids and Benadryl. Benadryl is cheap, but makes the poor guy drowsy as hell all day long.

My vet recently gave me a bag of Hill's Derm Defense. This stuff is brand new and freaking amazing. It works just as well as giving him a daily dose of Benadryl and doesn't cause drowsiness.

Thought anyone out there with a similar problem would like to know about it.

Do you bathe your dog a lot? If so, don't.

Don't leave the dog out in the Sun for extended periods of time.

Is your dog shorthaired? Breed?

What breed is your pup?

I have a 3yo Lab and he constantly scratches and LOVES to have his lower back scratched and is constantly "wiggling" on the ground to scratch it.

I will give this stuff a try.

I give him a bath every couple of months. He's a short haired mut. Maybe some lab in him. Not really sure.

We have had good results with an oatmeal based shampoo, and by adding some fish oil to our dog's food. He still itches some, but his skin has gotten better. We also switched him to lamb based wet food and that really seemed to help.

Also, the allergies may be causing the dog to suffer from anxiety, and dogs can engage in self-destructive behavior when they are anxious.

So, the dog is itching, but the anxiety is making the biting, licking, scratching constant.

Knew this was coming. I'm actually a rep for Purina, so you know this stuff must be great.

My dog is blue and white, and they are notorious for having dry skin. I would bathe him every couple of months and he would have bumps all over his body. Once I stopped and bathed him less frequently he hasn't had any skin issues.

daily probiotic supplement could help

they make some that come in treat form

our dog has sensitive skin but also has a condition that superseded the allergy that required special food. We eventually start making his food at home and all issues are gone now.

His anal sacs might be full. Take him to the vet so they can empty them out.

My dog will be 14 in a few months and has had ear issues stemming from allergies since I got her at 6 months old. I've long since given up trying to treat it. I ignore her welps when she scratches her ears too much and it hurts.

Richard's Organic Oils help, along with Salmon Oil (mixed in with food) and Benadryl.

My dog used to get ear infections every time he'd go to my mom's house for 3+ days. Only difference between her house and mine was that they were giving him 2 or 3 milkbones a day. I told her to quit, and he doesn't get ear infections anymore. She still gives him treats, but a different brand
