Are you aware that the gratuity is hand keyed in at the end of the shift? They can easily add a dollar or two after you sign. It's rarely checked or disputed. If it is disputed, it becomes a "clerical error."

Yeah since I moved back Europe it always freaks me out so I double check my statements online.

Your only defense is from tips that are too large percentage -wise and the manager has to approve them

You wouldn't notice a higher charge after the fact?

They'd be fired in a minute.

Only in America. I have been traveling for nearly a decade internationally for business and America is the only place that still does this.

The fact that we recently moved to chip and pin cards seen an astronomical accomplishment where as other countries have been doing this since the 90s

Not what I'm talking about. They can easily take your card number and sell your info.

not really...fact is, regardless of what people want you to think, if you didn't authorize a charge on your credit card, you are not responsible for paying it....

They bring a credit card machine to the table for you to use. You never lose sight of your card.

Like kingpin said. Further, hey don't even have a tip line, which is fan fricking tastic, so if you do leave a tip it's cash and usually only one or two euro.

But they expect Americans to tip and give you a bad look if you don't. Learned my lesson and only spoke to them in french.

Was in Toronto a few weeks ago and they do the same thing. Never did my card leave my hand. They hand you the device and you execute the transaction.

They can have at it. No liability for fraudulent charges here.

That was my thought. That's a big reason I use one - always protected

You must not be familiar with the restaurant industry in the south. Rednecks will be back at the restaurant in a heartbeat to dispute that clerical error. I've seen it done over literal change. I'm talking 50 cents when I served. And I saw people fired when it became one too many times.
