Just got a call this past weekend about a solid business opportunity.

I know the real estate is expensive. I would find some way to get that done.

What are the schools like? I have a first and third grader.

Other tips? Thanks in advance if anyone knows.

It's a very small community at the end of the road, literally. Mostly older retiree types and tourist.

The Eastern Europeans have taken over most of the shitty t-shirt shops. Lots of cash in that business so most everyone assumes it's for money laundering/mafia activities.

I've never lived there but I can't imagine it would be fun. The tourists cover it almost all year long and it can be tough to get around town. The nice neighborhoods seem to be leaning toward airbnb so you'll never know who is next door.

It would have to be a really solid opportunity and I would probably not live in Key West. I'd probably go a bit North and drive in to town when needed.

Awesome place. Be prepared to spend a small fortune on a house. I know there is a catholic school in old town. If I were gonna live there, old town would be the place for me.

No way I could live there. You'd have to totally change your mindset. Not that it's not doable or not worth doing, but it'd be pretty radical for most of us.

To me it seems like a situation where for the first couple of months, you're all "it's great, everyone is so laid back, life is at a different pace."

Fast forward a couple more months, and it's "HOW IS IT THAT NOBODY ON THIS GODDAMN ISLAND GIVES A SINGLE frick ABOUT ANYTHING?!!?"

Doesn't seem like an ideal place to raise kids. (Image raising your kids in the French Quarter...great place to visit, but not live) Maybe it's just me. The beaches suck in Key West and I'd eventually get tired of the tourist.

What roadGator said. Traffic will be bad going into Key West on Fridays and out on Sundays. Suggest living North of Key West. and you are against traffic.

Key West is awesome. I'd love to be able to move there. Outside of Old Town, it's a pretty standard island town, and not as obscenely expensive once you get outside that area a bit. Slower pace of life, amazing weather 9 months a year, hot as balls the other 3. Amazing fishing and outdoor activities. Beaches do kinda suck, but beyond that....

Monroe County schools are consistently rated very high every year.

IMO living 20 miles or so north might be better for a family situation. Keep in mind, it's a two lane road in and out and during the busy season the traffic can be a real bitch going in and out so that needs to be taken into account for a commute. As others have said, it's expensive though I think if you can make it work would be awesome. Do you and family like to fish?
