Only animal of mine I've ever personally put down was my chocolate lab I had. One of the toughest things I've ever had to do in my life. Still get sad thinking about old girl.

Why did you have to put it down yourself? And what did you do?

Ive put a bullet through the head of a few animals ive owned. It sucks for sure but a lot cheaper than paying a vet to do it

I've done it a few times. I cried like a baby.

So you're either going to let the pet suffer or make someone else go through the painful process of putting down your pet?

Nope. It's just not something I can do. I take them to the vet.

Vets kind of get paid to do that sort of thing.

Yep. I had the vet come to my house to do it. Told him there was no way I would be able to drive home from his office after he put her down.

He obliged. Good ole baw with that LSU degree.

I'm never going to personally put a pet down again. Ill take them all to the vet from now on who has no emotional attachment and does it for a living. Damn, you sounded like a dumb frick with that post.

Vet's/Vet tech's do it every day. No big deal for them.

ETA: I worked at the parish pound the summer after my freshman year. Sure it was tough, but didn't carry it home with me. I've lost 3 of my own dogs in my life and cried for hours for all 3 of them.

No, I don't think I could

We put down our 6 year old racing greyhound a month and a half ago. Giant cancerous tumor found in her chest cavity. Gone a day later. That was difficult enough, saying goodbye. I couldn't do it myself

I had an uncle who did that on a regular basis. A 22 to the head and never blinked an eye.

Had to do it twice. One was my dog, other was neighbor's dog. Both times they had been hit by a car and were suffering.

I had to chop the heads off a couple pet chickens my kids had. I explained to them the circle of life and the hens were suffering, but they still cried when I did it.

I've never had to put down a dog, but our Doberman got old and sick while I was gone away to college so my little brother dug a big hole, drug her into it and shot her. She had gotten in the hips and couldn't get up and had been laying in pee. He said he didn't want to put her in his car to bring to the vet.
