Anyone here ever had a muscle biopsy?

My son has one scheduled for Thursday. Not really sure what to expect. Was it very painful? How fast was recovery?

Sounds like that might suck.

It's not going to be a picnic for sure. But I'm not sure how much sucking to expect.

Had a bone marrow biopsy. On the Top 3 pains Alatgr does not recommend.
Muscle can be anesthetized though so I would guess it won't be that bad?

I'm pretty sure it won't be as bad as bone marrow for sure. It's general, so he won't feel anything during. Just not sure about after.

Had bone marrow biopsy also and would like to avoid having to do that again. Ouch! Doubt a muscle biopsy will be as painful.

If it's a needle muscle biopsy, I don't think it would be anything more than sore. They just stick a needle in the muscle and get cells that way. The other way is through an incision which I assume is more painful

Incision. Not sure how they remove the muscle. Nobody has answered my questions yet. I think and alligator needle.

After reading on it, for an incision, they use sharp scissors to remove the muscles, however it appears that a local anesthetic is applied. It said mild discomfort will be felt during it. It didn't mention recovery for an incision biopsy. I guess recovery depends on which muscle and how much muscle. Which muscle is it from and why if you don't mind me asking

Yeah, I can't find much online about recovery. They're taking it from hid thigh. Trying to narrow down the exact form of his disease so we can narrow down his treatment. It probably won't show us anything though. An outside chance we're told, but a necessary step

I imagine it would be something similar to a surgery recovery depending on how much they take

How old is he and what type of symptoms is he having?
Sorry that he's experiencing this and, as a Dad myself, I know you must hate it too.

9. He has mitochondrial myopathy. Just not sure which form. We asked for our doctor not to give us a prognosis but work on a better treatment should the test give us anything.

He will be sore for a while, but he will be fine.
During the procedure, depending on his tolerance, he will be witnessing mild discomfort to minor pain.
No big deal in the long run, just some soreness.

Thanks! Not too sore to walk or anything though right?

I hate this for you and your family. Prayers for your boy.

Welllll that is hard to say. Again, it depends on his tolerance and the doctors orders.(I would assume it should be no problem as long as he is obviously not planning to go jogging anytime soon)
Im assuming since you asked, he will be receiving it in his leg area?
Here is a video of a muscle biopsy from the vastus lateralus in the leg(part of the quad). It may seem serious but it is absolutely no big deal and the patient is awake during, hence the local anesthetic he administers during.

I got something to deaden the area locally, then a bigger needle was used to go in and gather the sample. No real recovery time to speak of. He may notice a bit of soreness for a day or 2, but really nothing to worry about. Good luck.
Sorry, I just noticed it is an incision type. Are we talk laproscopic or scapel? Laproscopic shouldn't be that bad. Recovery would be short. I have no idea if it is scalpel.
I am sorry for the circumstances and wish you only the best of good luck in this.
