A buddy and I are thinking of flying to Vegas the Wednesday before the the second and third round and leave the Monday after. I looked at hotel rates at Harrahs but they are almost $200/night. Where are some other hotels for a decent rate? And for those of you that have been during March madness, how crazy are the sports books?

I've been to Vegas during the NBA playoffs and absolutely loved hitting the sportsbooks several times a day

The sports books are overflowing with people who come to watch all of the games going on at once. It is the busiest time of the year other than the Super Bowl.

I loved being in Vegas for NFL wildcard weekend a few years ago. I can't imagine March Madness. I would be broke.

Eta stayed at the Paris and in Ceasars for the sportsbook.

We went two years ago and the rates at The Palazzo were pretty good. Did most of our sportsbook gambling at Emeril Stadium and Caesar's.

Hit the Rhino at night when games are over.

My friends and I go every year for Sweet 16 weekend.

It's a ton of fun. A lot of the west coast schools are on Spring Break also. The crowds can get crazy when $$ is riding on it.

Don't know about rates, but we don't ever venture away from the happening part of the strip (Bellagio, Wynn, Palazzo, Cosmopolitan, Caesar's, Planet Hollywood)

Stayed at cosmopolitan for the first week of the tournament a few years ago. Didn't think rates were spiked then at all. Sports books stay packed but the rest of the town was normal. Had a great time.

Hotel rates often depend on how many conventions are in the area at the time. Vegas.com is pretty good for finding deals.

From a purely people watching standpoint, NOTHING beats NASCAR weekend here.

It's on the bucket list. I've been threatening to go out there for that weekend for about 5 years. Never plan ahead well enough and always end up not going. Bout to start looking at air and hotel. Thanks for the reminder

I happened to be there when St. Joseph's was making that "run" in the tournament...it was definitely busy and it captured everyone's attention.

Was there for Super Bowl last year, lines at sports book were about a mile long so get there early. Standing room early watching the game, so I paid to go to a Super Bowl watching party. I would expect first weekend of March madness to be even busier, my boss goes every year and loves it

I thought it was way too crazy. Flew in the morning it started and was dumb enough to think I could get bets in about a half hour before the first games and didn't have a chance to get bets placed. Every book is jammed. You need to either reserve a table or sleep overnight to get a spot. One good thing is some casinos will open conference rooms and set up TVs and betting registers. I was there during final four last year and it was way more relaxed and enjoyable.

My friends and I go every year for the first weekend, it's by far the best time of the year for a sports fan to be in Vegas, better than the super bowl and better than New Years bowl games. The sports books are absolutely electric for those 4 days. I've heard great things about emeril's place but reservations are impossible even months in advance.
