I have one and even though we had it cleaned professionally when we moved in, if you open a door or window in the house the smoke will come out into the room.

I'm not familiar enough to know.. but I'm guessing I need to install 2 glass door hearths on each side so I can keep one side closed at all times to avoid this?

What else is weird about an open fireplace that I should be aware of. For a normal fireplace I'm used to just sticking some newspaper and wood in it and lighting it.

See if you can adjust the damper and reduce the effect. Most have a few notches of adjustment.

Not sure why anyone would want or need this. I'd just keep on side closed and use the other.

negative. first of all most see through fireplaces require glass doors. second, when operating the fireplace both doors either need to be open or both closed.

Ha, yea I have one of those SOBs. Super fricked up thing is that I threw away all of the doors but one after Katrina since I just figured I'd replace them with nicer ones...still haven't. If my fans are on in the living room the smoke will pour out the other side.

Let our family use our house for Thanksgiving and holy shite they must have burned 5 fires and kept the fans on the whole time. I walked in and almost passed out the smell was so bad. It's not bad if you just pay attention.

My first house had one. I don't think we ever had a fire that didn't fill the house with smoke . Just gave up after several tries.

We have one and I hate it. We have a draft from the living to kitchen/breakfast when the AC runs. I've never burned a fire in it and it took about a year after moving in for the campfire smell to go away in the kitchen when the AC ran.

my fil has one. He closes the damper about half way and it is quite cozy.

Never seen smoke in his house at all.

I have one between my master bath and master bedroom.

It's gas, so I have no problems.

We have one that separates the kitchen from the den (TV room), with both sides having glass doors as you've noted.

No problems at all with smoke in the room when doors open.
