Not that you asked for this advice, but from the faculty side of the house I can tell you that all other things being equal - reasonably high test scores, GPA, campus involvement, etc. - the essay portion of the application may be the most important part.
Grammar mistake, excessive passive voice, misplaced modifiers, and the like are quick ways to get your app tossed into the round file. Cluttered, confused, undisciplined writing usually comes from cluttered, confused, undisciplined minds.
