I mean like something just takes you over and who knows what goes on and then you are like outside your body watching it and then bam you smack right back to reality?

I have an acquaintance who has spent a good part of his career as a Psychiatrist working with the criminally insane
and he started out his career thinking the same thing as you do, however his view on the subject has changed 180 degrees. There are many others that deal with this subject that know it is not a myth. Things are not as cut and dried in real life as you might believe.
Also to the O.P. what you are referring to is an out of body experience or an o.b.e.
