Anybody experience spinal injury with their dog?

My 3 year old left the gate open slightly and we didn't catch it before heading out for dinner Saturday. She was out about 2 hours.

Yesterday she showed signs of being injured. Took her to the vet and x-rays look good...suspect soft tissue.

Fast forward to today and she is clearly having more significant symptoms such as dragging her back legs and walking on her knuckles. So, another vet trip uncovers spinal trauma (which would require an MRI to assess).

Meanwhile, when the spinal cord/nerves are irritated, she lashes out violently which is understandable and bit me pretty good on the hand.

So, obviously this is terrible for her and us (specifically with a 3 year old). We think she was hit by someone with something which I couldn't blame them for. She got out of my yard and can be intimidating, although I don't think she'd bite.

Anybody experience similar spinal issues? Outcome? I think our only hope is it is just swelling putting pressure on the spinal cord. If it is anything more severe and more permanent we will likely have to tell her goodbye.

This happened to my dog and after about a week, she became paralyzed from the neck down. We had to put her down. Prayers sent.

And the lashing out is so sad. They're in so much pain. Just be careful around her and rub her front paws or ears gently.

My dachshund has constant issues now that she's older. Have to crate her for weeks when she hurts her back. It sucks. Never will get another one.

It happened at about 1am this morning and scared the shite out of me...then again trying to get her out of her kennel at the vet, which is when she bit me.

I know I'm holding out for about a 1% chance...but we have to give her a few days.

We realize that is almost a certain outcome. She's isolated from him.

re: Anybody experience spinal injury with their dog?
give it some time. my friend had a dachsund that had some kind of similar thing happen and it was really bad at first but they did something that involved keeping the dog kenneled and crated for a few days so it could get rest and what not. as far as i know the dog is doing fine now (injury happened right around thanksgiving time)

She's just in pain. Poor thing.

We gave it about a week. And she was still paralyzed, and only getting worse, so we put her down. It was the saddest thing I've ever seen.

We had a weiner dog that had this. Vet said it can happen if they turn to quick while running or just jump wrong. The dog deterriorated and we eventually had to put him down.

Strict crate rest for any hope of recovery. I take it the vet prescribed Rimadyl or similar, or gave steroid injection, etc.

Worst part is we have a Disney trip from Sunday to Sunday...leaving this weekend. Best case scenario is she shows improvement and I have to board her...which if she were healthy she'd be living the life in the country with her cousin dogs.

:(

Happened to my sisters dachshund. They can be prone to it. Jumping down off of furniture can cause it. So can up and down stairs a good bit. He was dragging himself around and the vet said he'd likely not recover. They put him down a day or two later. Lost all control of bodily functions and was constipated. Was struggling to poop.

Rimadyl and Tramadol...steroid shot today.

Picking up a tranquilizer to keep her relaxed for the next day or two.

What a retarded thing to say. You have read two posts about the dog and you say it needs to be put down. Where did you go to vet school again?

re: Anybody experience spinal injury with their dog?
I had a friend work who's dog was hit by a car. It's pelvis/hip was knocked off or severed from the spine but the nerves and tendons were still attached. It also had multiple broken bones throughout its body. It was in a lot of pain ("crazy with pain" was the description) and also lashed out if touched. The 1st vet recommended that she put it down but instead, my friend had the dog undergo surgery where the Dr used plastic screws to reattach the pelvis to the spine. This was approx 7 months ago and today the dog is walking and can jump on the couch and seems to have recovered well. She told me that all the surgeries ended up costing approx $9,000. If you are in Houston area, here's the vet she used

I'm not insensitive, but we don't have $9Gs to throw at it...just don't.

re: Anybody experience spinal injury with their dog?
here are some things he posted about
quote:

ive been reading that a slipped disc is fairly common... rest and vitamins / medicine have been known to help out.. surgery can be way more successful in recovery, but obviously more expensive...

quote:

no pain... she was yesterday and friday.. today she is doing better.. going to the bathroom on her own. just needs a ton of rest.

quote:

I guess the anti-inflammatory medicine has helped out. We will find out how things have progressed when we go back to the vet next week and get some X-rays

sounds like it was a slipped disc or something. hope whatever is wrong w/ your pup is fixable with some rest and medication

re: Anybody experience spinal injury with their dog?
Our dog broke down chasing one of our cats back in 2002. For over 10 days he couldn't stand. A clinic in Slidell did a myelagram (sp) and couldn't find a spinal cord injury. They said it was an instability issue in his neck. He got better and eventually got back on his feet. He had trouble getting up and he had to walk and poop at the same time. My wife is a DVM so he had a good life.
He walked funny because he couldn't lift his head. He couldn't jump, either. That happy SOB lived another 10 years. He had to be put down 3/31/12 because he couldn't get up on his own; and he started pissing/pooping in the house. Generally, he was really weak and frail. His ashes are on the mantle.
