Furthest I ever went was here (La.) to Aspen and that was mostly a straight through trip. (We were in a Suburban and had like 6 people who could drive) and a good chunk of the trip was at night. So it wasn't a real "experience Americana" type of trip.

Anybody got any good stories or just reflections on a trip to out of the way parts of the country.

Drove from Pensacola to Seattle one summer.

Long damn time to be in the car with the family.

When you get out West, in places like Montana and Wyoming, make sure you call ahead for a hotel room on weekend nights...they come in from the hills and rent all the rooms.

South of Jackson, MS, on the way home, some squirrely black guy towing a junk car with another junk car ran me off the road and into a curb that the highway department had cut and not repaired. Blew both tires on the left side.

Drove from New Orleans to sante fe when I was 19.
Pretty fun.
Wouldn't do that now though.

I've taken cross country trips, but only to get somewhere - not to see America (although I tried to see what I could).

But it sounds like a fun thing to do.

NOLA to Gettysburg and stopping at all major civil war battle fields along the way. Also spend some time in Williamsburg, VA for revolutionary war sites

That does sound like an adventure. You could probably get a novel out of something like that if you were so inclined.

I have seen 48 states and the first time for most was by car.

My moms a huge traveler (100+ countries now) and we would go on 3 month road trips during the summer growing up.

I have been all over the country, and never have enough time to see it all. There's just too much to see in a lifetime.

When you were at Aspen, you guys should have kept driving west a bit, you would have seen some really awesome scenery.

Love road trips. I've seen most of the country on the road.

Drove all over the U.S. back in the early '90's catching Grateful Dead shows...from Boston to L.A. and many points between.

What a long strange trip it was...

Drove from NOLA to Sedona, AZ. We hit Carlsbad, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, and Grand Canyon along the way and way back. 3700 miles total for the entire duration.

Drove from Austin to Southern Utah to visit Natural Bridges National Monument, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands National Parks. The Southern Utah desert is gorgeous and very isolated. Aside from the National Parks and Moab, there is nothing but government land and barely any people. You can go hiking, camping, canyoneering, mountain biking, ATV riding without a soul in sight. The weather is an experience by itself. When I was there for a week last March, there was a dust storm at Natural Bridges with gusts up to 60mph and heavy snow at Arches.

Driving on scenic Utah Highway 95 is a must.

Also did a drive from Portland to Eugene, Crater Lake, Bend, Mt. Hood, and back to Portland, OR. Just amazing scenery the entire length of the trip. My favorite part of that was driving up to Mt. Hood Timberline Lodge. I mean you're at the base of a frickin Stratovolcano!

Me and 3 friends took a 2 week trip in college. Drove from Ruston to Columbia, MO to pick up a friend then went to NE, SD, MT, WY, then down into Denver to meet up with friends, across KS back to MO, then back to LA. 4500 miles in total. Great trip. If anyone gets a chance to take a trip like that with your friends, don't hesitate. I still talk about that trip all the time.

Wouldn't want to live there, but California is incredible to see. So many different places and it can change so fast. I mean places that nobody even talks about, like The Saltillo Sea. That place was stunning to me at the north shore.

This would be a dream type trip for me. But my family would be so bored it wouldn't make for an enjoyable trip. Only battlefield sites I've seen have been Vicksburg, Chalmette and one in Tennessee (Lookout mountain I think).
