When I was kid there were a lot of Masons and we knew several Shriners.

I saw the ad for the Shriner Hospitals this morning and started thinking that I don't believe I know any Shriners any more. I only know maybe one or two possible masons.

Are you a Mason or a Shriner?

There is still a group who ride these bad boys in my hometown's annual parade.

I don't see anyone younger than 106 in them but they still kick it.

I know a Mason who's about 40 years old and he says there are plenty of Masons out there you just don't realize it. But not in a sinister way, just in a sodomy way.

A lot of cops are masons for whatever reason. Don't know any Shriners but the hats are on point.

All of my great uncles were masons and my dad and uncles were lapsed masons.

I don't think the masons were ever as big in South Louisiana as they were in the rest of the South because of the old Catholic stance against the Masons.

I don't think there as big anywhere as they were in like 1950 or 1960,

The Masonic Shriners wear a red hat known as a Fez named after a town in Morocco, where in 980 AD, 50,000 Christians, including women and children, were brutally murdered by the Muslims. As the streets ran red with the Christians’ blood from the massacre, the Muslims dipped their hats in that blood as a testimony to Allah. The red Fez symbolizes the slaughter of Christians in that town. The Masons still wear the red Fez adorned with the Islamic crescent symbol. Among the oaths of the Masonic Shriner organization is one that says, “...and may Allah the God of Arab, Muslim, and Mohammedan, the God of our fathers support me to the entire fulfillment of the same. Amen, Amen, Amen.”

No., but I used to go to the Shrine Circus as a kid in the 1970's. Dad was a cop and they gave free tickets to the police.

Washington Post had a great article about Masons and Shriners in 2001 that described the history and addressed how young folks are no longer as interested in such organizations. LINK

The Masons have hired consultants to find ways to boost interest. The results say young folks are not interested in pomp, circumstance ritual, elaborate initiations, special garb, and secret ceremonies.

One consultant, who is a Mason, says he's told them this over and over, but they won't take the advice. The old guys "really love the mumbo-jumbo" and won't change even though they are losing 4% per year.

From the article: "Every day, old Masons die and are no longer replaced by a younger generation. Today, there are fewer than 2 million Masons in America and their average age is well over 60."

I know a few masons both young and old. I always make fun of them by telling him they are a cult and drink the "funny koolaid"

My father and a Uncle that was a Shriner. I also know a guy that I graduated high school with that's a Shriner. He's probably 41 years old. Definitely the youngest one I know.
