Any suggestions for helping break a dog of separation anxiety?

My dog is an awesome outgoing, sweet dog. If I died tomorrow, I'd have people fighting over who would get her. But she gets visibly sad when I leave. It was normal puppy stuff, and was starting to fade, but then I worked in the road for a few months with her, so all of a sudden, she's spent 25% of her life in hotels and coming to work with me.
Now I'm on night shift, and when I pull up, she's looking through the window, waiting for me at 4-5 am.
She basically spent her first year growing up in the French Quarter and going to local festivals, so she's well socialized, and bonds easily. But she hates being alone so much, I can't go outside to smoke without her crying and following me around the house, unless a crowd shows up.
Anyone here who's dealt with this, or has worked with dogs? I just moved into a place with roommates for the first time ever, so I'm hoping that'll help. I just hate seeing my sweet bitch cry.

I'll give her a bone or a rawhide (I know, but I keep an eye on her with those), because she likes to chew since she's a Staffie. I just had to train her what was cool to chew, and what materials weren't. I play drums, so I kept her from wood as much as possible. I caught a ton of stuffed animals during her first Mardi Gras. But that was a straight up disaster everyone I came home.
Luckily, at almost 2, the chewing isn't too bad anymore.

dogs are pack animals so obviously they'd rather be with their master than alone.
When I go outside and my dog is inside and can see me, he whines.
Why haven't you crate trained her?

Get another dog, or keep them occupied with stuff.

Talk to your Vet about once daily Clomicon. (Seriously)

Have a friend who has a dog that has been prescribed Xanax for when she leaves her for more than a day.

unless she is tearing up stuff, chances are she is sleeping the majority of the time you are gone - if she is tearing up stuff, then crate train her. Most dogs actually enjoy the confinement of a crate - it makes them feel safe and secure...

As for the chewing, get her some of those Himalayan yak milk bone chew things, no joke, mine love them. I have some pit mixes w pretty strong jaws and those yak bones hold up pretty well.

Put an old t-shirt of yours on her bed...your smell will comfort her...or get a second dog...

There is lots of good information out there. If you notice the dog waiting for you anxiously when you get home, swat him across the nose a few times. A rolled up magazine is pretty affective. If he tears up stuff, be sure to show him the tore up object, shout at him "NO!", and swat him a cross the nose several times. If he pees or poops in the house, rub his nose in it real good and perform the other technique that I already mentioned. Basically, dogs have very sensitive noses and respond well to pain to it.

Best answer so far has been "get another dog"

My dog would get upset and bark and howl when we would go. My wife suggested we get him a buddy so we got another dog.
It has really made a difference as they will come outside when we leave and are inside when we return. Doggy door.
