We are thinking of going this summer and taking our 2 year old daughter. I've been once but it was 15 years ago. We were thinking of maybe getting a house on VRBO, possibly by the beach. Any areas you can suggest to look at?

Here you go: Beachfront VRBO listings in La Jolla Village

You probably want to stay in La Jolla (Pronounced "La Hoya"). Wide range of properties to fit any budget. Great shopping, beaches, food, etc.

DO IT!!!!

Most beautiful city in America.

Perfect weather, gorgeous beaches, great food, great people.

If it were affordable, I'd move there in a heartbeat.

This.

I lived in La Jolla for a while and will be going back eventually. Politics aside, it's hard to argue aganist SoCal especially SD/La Jolla. It's spectacular.

San Diego is pretty damn terrific. I really enjoyed Old Town San Diego last time I was there.

Went to undergrad in La Jolla. It's awesome but don't forget to see all of San Diego County, especially North San Diego County.

The one time I went I loved it! Been telling the wife about it and she has never been.

One other question...how long of a drive is it to Disneyland? We could maybe kill two birds with one stone that week

It's soo nice they give bums in other cities bus tickets to go there!! (True story)

That aside, I've been twice to go to MCRD San Diego. Everything posted above is true. Lovely place.

I live in Carlsbad which is north county that someone was talking about earlier and the last time I went to Disney it took me 45 minutes, a Saturday at 6am. Do not try and go there during the week it'll probably take three times as long.

Discovered by the Germans in 1942, it was named San Diego which of course means whale's vagina.

Is it mission beach or PB that has the pier with cabins on it? You can drive on the pier. It is basically a street.

The cabins are small but I just thought it was cool to stay over the water like that.

Would be nervous with little ones though.

I remember Carlsbad was OK and I tried to spend as little time in Oceanslime as possible.
San Clemente was my favorite area though.

We go every other year and stay at Del Mar Beach Club. The San Diego Zoo is amazing. Midway is pretty cool as well if you're into that. Hotel Coronado is pretty cool. George's is a must restaurant IMO. And if you golf Torrey Pines or Encinitas Ranch are my two favorite courses in the area.
