Ive been debating this career for a while now. Im a senior( gonna be a super senior) in agribusiness at LSU with a shitty GPA( long story), Should I switch to biology now and be here for another 4 years or should i graduate, and try to get my pre -requisites at BRCC and then apply to a PA program out of state?

Also, how do you like your job?

It's not a bad profession. I'd highly recommend looking into CRNA though. Slightly longer road however

The shreveport program is pretty competitive to get into and only takes in state applicants, not sure about other states taking out of state applicants. Not sure if you could bump your GPA enough starting with a "Shitty GPA"

I'm sorry, you're not getting into most programs with those credentials. Admission, right now, is super competitive, and you're mostly competing with pre-meds who have changed course, and science majors with allied health already as their plan.

I'm not saying you WON'T find a program to accept you, but it's going to be very difficult for you, and you may have to endure alot of rejection before being accepted.

It's my wifes job, and it's fricking fantastic. For earning potential/home life balance, it's ideal.

I, OTOH, hire PA's and see alot of resumes. You've got an uphill battle to say the least.

It's pretty competitive, in Shreveport at least. Not sure how you'll do with a low GPA

I'm a PA.

I'd graduate then get prereqs. A biology degree won't make you more competitive. Find the program you want to go to first then look at their prereqs. Most programs have the same core science prereqs such as biology, chemistry and micro, but some may require physics, statistics or other courses that others don't require. If your GPA is low you'll need to bump that up. Programs may not necessarily mind a 3.0 but it needs to show an upwards trend (i.e. crappy as a freshman then you worked to improve it). In any case, get it as high as possible.

I love my job. I work on a Marine Corps base and am prior military myself. I have a lot more autonomy than a lot of PAs in the civilian sector would.

I would research PA programs as far away as you're willing to relocate. That may be instate or out of state for you. PA schools are opening up at an incredible rate right now. Cast a wide net.

Side note, why don't you want to go to med school?

I know I cant do it. Im sure PAs are very intelligent but doctors have a crazy work load, responsibility, bad home life, and Id fail out of med school. And i wouldnt get it. Only plus doctors have is more pay, more respect, and they get women

PA is great is you want to do a lot of the actual work and you do not mind how much money the physician makes.

But in all seriousness, it is a very solid profession. I would pick a facility based on PA almost, if not more, than on the MD. As a patient, you will spend much more time with the PA

Do the fast track nursing program at LSU (antomomy and phys are the only really tough courses), finish that in 18 months, work in ICU for a year, CRNA school in 3 years and/or NP school in 2 years online. Can't beat the lifestlye of either.

This is actually a viable suggestion, OP.

You're more likely to accomplish this than the other.

Yeah, surgeons do make bank. But thats when they turn 30 .And tbh, If i could redo college over, id make sure id work hard and get into PA school, but PA is my backup. Dream careers were film or even federal law enforcement. I have always been interested in the human body and medicine though.

Well, it's a question he'll/she'll be asked at interviews in all likelyhood. It's something to have an answer for.

Good point. Sorry, I'm thinking literal.

Physician as an occupation is just not very desirable in this enviroment, IMO.

ETA: Of course, in this environment, neither is healthcare admin, so who the hell am I to talk.

Becoming an RN might be the best route here since almost anyone can get into a nursing program. Then if you choose to further your career, you can try to become a NP.

How low of a GPA are we talking about here??
