Unions are great until the company the union works for can no longer compete with global competition. Go through the mid-West and North East and look at all the shuttered Automobile, wiring and stamping plants. Those guys made bank until GM, Ford, and Chrysler figured out they could save hundreds of dollars on a wiring harness, transmission or car hood made in Mexico where workers made a fraction of the money a union worker in Ohio was making.

Packard Electric is a case study on how global markets killed the companies and thus the IUE. Union security and janitors were making $40.00/ hour in 2006. Once Packard went bankrupt they re-hired 200 of the 1000 member workforce at 1/4 their previous pay, with a major drop in benefits.

The anti union sentiment on this site is hilarious

Fact is unions are great for the middle class and blue collar workers

For auto workers in Detroit in 1965, maybe

for office workers in today's America, not so much

Office workers aren't being told to work 18-20 hour days for multiple days in a row outside doing manual labor......

Unions are great for those that suck at what the do and have little marketable skill.

Never had a desire to be in a union and limit myself to a certain wage structure or benefits. It has worked out just fine for me.

So no.

I represent a number of construction trades and can make something of a case for them in terms of ensuring safety and a decent pension for the guys with a ready, skilled workforce for the employers. Not quite as much in residential construction, though. Public unions are weird to me.

Agree 100%. We should be taxing the shite out of the incoming goods.

The argument you are making is that we should lower the standard for worker pay and conditions to compete with cheap goods from other countries. Not try to elevate the competition.

The companies making stuff overseas and bringing finished goods in are setting the market. They make way more profit playing the game while Americans are being asked to make more for less.

We should be putting America first.

Constuction trades are one area they still make sense, particularly for journeymen.

As far as teachers go, Pecker, your statement has everything to do with tenure and nothing to do with union membership. I joined the union simply for liability protection.

35 years as USW member in two different jobs. Went thru 3 company buy outs. The union helped as the selling point every time.

I want to control it as a business.

I don't want it near schools and I don't want it sold to children.
