ruzil the 3 options you gave me, none include the same built in retainer? Do they not do those anymore? The thing lasted a long time, im not unhappy with it or anything. Its like 1 wire across my teeth haha it doesnt seem like some complex gizmo, shouldnt they be able to just put another one and be done with it?

I thought most braces came off. What are the criteria for a permanent appliance? The OP said he's had it since he was 12, which seems pretty pessimistic to me.

It was after I had my braces removed they put it in and I never even saw that orthodontist again haha I wasn't even in high school yet like 7th or 8th grade. I really have never had problems with it, I even still use those things to string floss underneath it, its a pain in the arse but ive been doing it forever so im used to it now.

See option 2, go to the ortho or dds and have the fixed retainer repaired or replaced. I shouldn't cost too much and it will save you from having your teeth get spaces or crooked again.

The teeth are in the position they are in because the tongue and lips put them there. If you tongue is the dominant factor, your teeth will generally have gaps between them.

If the lips are the dominant factor, you would tend to have crowded teeth or a square arch form.

The retainer, fixed or removable, retains the post orthodontic position of the teeth.

ruzil while i have a dentist on the Q & A was this thing supposed to last forever? haha pretty remarkable it lasted so long for such a probably cheap piece of equipment, im fascinated actually, i really never even thought about the thing before tonight. If it didnt break today was it really potentially going to last 50+ years?

how is that affected by the chronic lapping of labia? seems that might alter that a bit

So "overactive" lips or tongue determine whether you need the permanent retainer?

is it normal to keep an appliance like that in one's mouth for 22 years?

I've had one for 13 years. You don't notice it, and you can't see it. It's a lot better than putting a retainer in every night.

Just be nice and don't let your teeth touch it.

A lot of factors in play here.

It will last as long as it lasts based on how well it is fabricated and bonded to the teeth.

You wouldn't expect your car to last forever and you shouldn't expect your retainer to last forever without eventual replacement.

One advantage to having it removed is it will cause less calculus buildup occur around the retainer. You have salivary ducts on the floor of your mouth that will cause tartar buildup on the backside of your lower front teeth. A permanent retainer causes an accelerated buildup because you have all these nice little spaces between the retainer and the gum tissue for plaque to accumulate.
