any of you ever hear of this "promposal" shite?

Last night, my wife and I were talking to our son, who is starting high school next month. She half-jokingly asked what he was going to about Homecoming: who would he ask, and HOW?
Obviously, he had no idea who he would ask, but as to how, he said he would simply ask the girl. It was at this point that she started talking about "posters" that were used to ask girls to dances, and how this was the "thing" now (and pulled up some Google images of them).
What. The. frick?!?
Is this really a thing?

I knew how was a big thing-kids do elaborate stuff.
But idk what a poster is unless is like a walmart poster that someone wrote on.
There is a name that goes with this whole thing--promposal.
