He's a 10 year old English Bulldog and about 3-4 months ago he started just randomly barking for no reason several times a day. He's still doing this and I feel bad because I can't tell if he's in pain (he has arthritis) or just going senile.

The vet said there is nothing physically wrong with him other than old age and his arthritis. I do think he's lost some hearing and maybe some sight but he's not deaf or blind...yet.

He's probably bored, or has a brain tumor.

It's the same as old people fussing for no reason

I would guess it's due to hearing or sight loss, and maybe it's scaring him?

I've got a nearly deaf dog around that age doing the same thing. It's not crazy extended barking, just random "Woof" and some growling every now and then, like he's just grumpy about today's generation of puppies.

Regardless of age, are you exercising or stimulating his brain daily?

Shock collar worked on a young Beagle.

For whatever reason he was barking enough that I had complaints.

It's typically a hearing or vision issue related to age. A bark collar is the best medicine to r mind him not to bark.

Our 13 yr old blind rat terrier barks at nothing for 5 min after her morning breakfast every day. She'll walk 30 ft from the back door and just start barking.

In addition to blindness, she's going deaf and her short term memory is fading fast. Once she wandered away and a neighbor returned her the next day. She bumps into a lot more things that previously she remembered their location (and we're on 5 acres). Saw her fall into the river behind the house a few months ago. Old age is a biotch.

My oldest dog was diagnosed with old dog disease last year. One day she started leaning and flopping over. I thought she had a stroke and would need to be put down. She still walks with her head cocked at a funny angle and leans sometimes, but is okay other than the random barking.

It's old age and a bark collar wouldn't be a fair choice because the dog would not understand what it is doing wrong. We had a 16 yr old blue tick that did this at random times of the day. We started giving her melatonin at night so she wouldn't do it at 3 AM. Most dogs start to exhibit signs of mental/age issues at 7

Is he intact? Our old lab would howl when the neighbors dog would go into heat. Even though he was too old to really do anything about it.

This. Old dogs do this sort of shite. It's nothing to discipline them for.
