I believe they can make you tear whatever you built down. That would suck.

I did all of my construction projects on my house without obtaining a permit (Huntsville, AL). As long as you don't work too early, work too late, and keep trash picked up, you should be alright. You're in the back yard, out of sight and out of mind. I wouldn't worry with it.

The neighbor issue to me makes this fine, it would have to just be bad luck to be caught. Don't get the material delivered in the driveway and leave it there for a week or two. No big trash piles.

neighbor next to me is putting up Hardy board, they have a dumpster and three piles of material. you can even drive into the backyard, but everything is in the front. They didn't get a permit and the city shut them down last week. Everything is still sitting out front.
We did a fence and siding without a permit, just kept everything in the back driveway until we hauled it off/ used it up.

My only thing is resale on the house. It's probably okay, but you may get that one house buyer that will research a property to see that proper permits were pulled for upgrades. I know because I'm that guy.

Ha! Tell that to the EBR permit office.

I would do it... worse case you get a stop work order.

I would build and remodel virtually anything in Prairieville. In New Orleans I get nervous changing floodlights without a permit.

This, and if word gets out people will avoid your house wondering what else you did that isn't verified to be up to code.

As people flock to subdivisions "thoroughly inspected" where builders can't even install a dryer vent correctly.

Just give me a flashlight and my eyeballs when buying a house.

Don't do it. You'll be fricked whenever you or your heirs try to sell the house.

Bad idea. If you ever sell your house you have to sign an affidavit stating that no unpermitted work was done. Get off your $125 and do it right.

You have x-ray vision to see the framing, electrical, and insulation inside the walls?
