since the downturn. anyone left the oilfield and found out that you prefer what you're doing now? and if so, what was your old job/new job?

i know several people who left or was forced to leave the O&G industry and found jobs paying 80% of what their O&G job paid but these new jobs were stable and less strenuous. They said no chance in hell they are going back to O&G.

I'm a petroleum engineer and I'm thinking about other options. Not too sure I want to go back to school though after paying off my student loans earlier this year.

Unless they're offered 20% over what they were making previously and then they'll be speeding back out there in their brand new jacked up F-350 diesels....And financing a brand new double wide!

In.

Laid off from Directional Services as a DD although I had just made the move from drilling optimization/well planning (bad decision in the end)

New job Civil Design

huge paycut but I don't think I will go back. I like my 4 9s and 4 work week. Its a much more normal and stress free life. I am not missing getting woke up with plan changes or well issues

Hanging by a thread, but they're lower more rope as we speak.

I left back in the fall of 2014. I never worked offshore though I primarily held a high position in the shop/office. I had worked there for almost 7 years.

I might eventually go back. I get calls every now and then offering me a raise in what I was making, a company truck, etc. I love my job now, but if I hold out for a few more perks I might just go back lol.

Been getting calls too. Mostly contract labor (no thanks) or an office position is shitty places like midland or casper. I hate Houston so that is out as well

I spent too much of my life traveling and living in less than desirable locations. it would have to be a sweet gig.

Company bankrupt January 1 2016.

Got picked up April 2016. New company bankrupt August 2016.

Doing odd jobs, publishing my research, and staying in the black pretty well, but I'm going back. Silly not to. Money's great and I love doing it. Not to mention I don't have a family or mortgage to worry about but if I did things may be different.

Not really. Time and age > money every time. I often observe (and reached the point that) the older you get, the less and less control money has over priorities.
