So, I have a degree and a masters already in a worthless liberal arts field. Incredibly, I'm employed, but I'm interested in learning accounting now just to sort of see what it's all about. Are there any online courses that are legit that could conceivably earn course credit towards being able to sit for the CPA exam some day?

What state you live in?
Also, you might want to ask this on the money talk board, might get some better answers there.

LSU independent and distance learning has a lot of accounting classes that you can take that count towards the CPA exam.
I actually was in a similar boat a few years ago. Went back to LSU and took most of the classes I needed. Then finished my last two accounting classes online. That's what I would recommend doing. Definitely do your research though because it won't be easy to go back for all those accounting classes. You'll also need generic business classes on your transcript for LA at least. Check out these links:

Lots of great information you'll need in there. I would definitely suggest the accounting field though if you are looking for something stable and worthwhile. Lots of different types of employment opportunities and stability if you can get your CPA.

I have a buddy that works in LSU's Distance Learning program. He says that the majority of their students are actually accountants or individuals in the finance industry who are looking to complete their CPA requirements. People from all across the country apply for those courses.
