Any info on instrument tech, oilfield, similar work?

I have a smart kid who says he will go insane if he has to go straight into college. Wants to bust it for a few yrs., save money. Any input on good options? Can be anywhere and IT training or some such is fine. Nights are fine. Couple weeks on, week off type thing would be great. I am NOT looking for a job for him, I'm wondering who has done/is doing something like this and has insight.

IMO, there is nothing wrong with sitting out of school for a year or two, if you are not ready right out of high school....in fact, a lot of money (and gpa points) would be saved if more folks would do so...
hopefully, you are making him do his own job search though, as that frustration is really what can drive home the need for a degree...
