Just wanted to know what your experience was like in med or pa school. I'm trying to decide which one I apply to. I will be getting out of the army in two months. I know the process can be lengthy. I just have to take prereqs and mcat if I decide med school. I'd like to get in ortho and one day work at a va clinic.

You can go to Optometry school now and be an Eye Surgeon with the white coat, script letters and everything!

PA seems like a better choice these days.

If this is your goal, I would do PA. The MD route is going to be lengthy since you are looking at 4 years of school and 5 years of ortho residency and that's only after you get the pre-req's, take the MCAT, and get accepted.

Stressful, long hours, little sleep. Probably aged 10 years in 4. And expensive.

With prior service you should look into ways army will pay for it. Coming out of med or pa school debt free is a big deal.

depends on your age. I am 25 year old M1 and I just don't understand how some of the older (28-35) made the decision.

My undergrad is in psychology which is why I need prerequisite courses.

Med School is an arduous route. As others said, you're looking at 9-10 years for Med School & Residency. On top of that, sounds like you have to take some pre-requisites. TWelve long years before you start making any money worthwhile. Besides the measley $48k you make in Residency.

How much does the GI Bill cover?

How old are you? My wife is 34 and is finally in her last year of training (fellowship). She will be 35 when she finishes. It is a long road so keep that in mind.

do you know if they still only accept something like 30 people a year? I know it used to be very hard to get into and highly unlikely you get in on your first try.

I believe LSU has a PA program in New Orleans now, but Im not sure.

I'm 32. I already talked to chairwoman of the pa school in person while I was on leave earlier this year. My post 9/11 would pay all my tuition since I'm still an la resident plus books and housing. My gut and brain tells me to go the pa route.

There is also a difference in doing your residency in your late 20s-early 30s versus your late 30s-early 40s. Getting older sucks.

At your age, I'd suggest the PA route. What is it, three years of school? What do they make, $75-90k?
