Amazon.com will begin collecting sales taxes from its Texas customers

quote:

As part of the deal, Amazon plans over the next four years to create at least 2,500 jobs and make at least $200 million in capital investments in the state. And it will begin to collect and remit Texas sales tax on July 1.

The agreement resolves all sales tax issues between Texas and Amazon, Combs said. Amazon closed a distribution center in Irving a year ago due to the dispute over whether it should collect sales taxes in Texas.

Government's gonna government.

I thought a ruling entity reaching into our pockets constantly was one of the contributing factors to the Revolution.

It has to start somewhere?

My Amazon Prime membership will start to look less attractive if and when this comes to Louisiana.

Wait so you don't voluntarily claim all of your internet purchases and then pay the taxes on them?

..and I thought OTers were law abiding.

For typing the word "revolution", you have likely been entered into an FBI watchlist.

I paid over $27K in Federal taxes alone last year. Shouldn't I be exempt the same way D'Shiki and L'Michael are for not paying taxes?

I won't stop using amazon if they start doing this in Louisiana. Their prices are still cheaper than almost any store.

On one hand it pisses me off. On the other, States are all in a monetary bind and a significant part of it is sales taxes lost to internet sales.

A lil tongue in cheek there will, I don't pay taxes on internet purchases, and I make most of my purchases on the net. There was a thread about a year ago with someone saying it was akin to stealing to not pay these taxes.

When I pay a sales tax, I go along with it because I've used public roads getting to the store. If I order online, what am I "getting" from the state?

only if they open a distribution center or store will you have to pay tax

kinda like itunes versus google, apple stores all over the place mean tax in the app store and itunes
no google stores mean no tax in the marketplace

You think UPS and FedEx use private roads to deliver those packages?

This. Plus sales taxes pay for a lot more than roads.
