One of Amazon’s biggest early advantages over brick-and-mortar retailers will disappear for good next month. The company will on April 1st start collecting sales in the states of Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, and New Mexico, according to a report from CNBC. That means Amazon will collect sales tax in all 45 states that require it, ending one of the company’s more drawn-out regulatory fights that the e-commerce giant had resigned itself to losing years ago. (For the record, Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon do not have a state sales tax.)

Been collecting in Alabama since last fall. It's a big benefit for amazon here. They collect 8%, and if they submit the funds in "in a timely fashion", the state will reimburse them 2%. So, Amazon is now making 2% more in Alabama than before. Must be nice.

Not sure you know how sales tax discounts and penalties work. Pay early, get a discount. Pay one minute late, get penalty. The discount, means you pay "on time". Penalty for a minute after.

Companies who collect sales tax are vendors for the state. It is a pass-through. I collect your tax, and give it to the state. I am being reimbursed for doing the state's job, of collecting their own taxes, on behalf of them.

Bottomline is that Amazon is making money off charging me sales tax. To the tune of 25% of the tax collected. Incredible windfall. I could see a small return for credit, but 2% of the total 8%??

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they only already collect if your item is being shipped from the same state you're in.

Maybe im too intoxicated right now, but i read the op as they are only collecting sales tax in those named states without regard from where the package was shipped.

Does not matter. Typically vendors only supposed to charge tax when they have a physical presence in the state where the item is delivered. Now Amazon is charging tax no matter what

In most states, if you are not charged sales tax, you are supposed to pay the sales tax to the state when you do your taxes. Most people don't obviously. So the states have lost millions and millions in tax dollars.

Not necessarily talking about you, but the outrage that many people are displaying about this is just laughable.

I could see a savvy tax attorney sinking his teeth into this matter......and causing major headaches for states and amazon.

Jet charges sales tax in Louisiana. I believe they were purchased by Walmart and if this is the case, they will charge sales tax nationwide.

Hasn't impacted my shopping in Louisiana. 3rd party vendors do not charge sales tax and many are listed as a Prime option.
