Gentlemen and Ladies of the OT,

Like many of you, I despise Wal Mart. Not for political or anti-corporate reasons, I just hate going. The people suck, its always crowded, it takes an hour to get in and get out, the child is screaming for a toy, etc.

I like buying meat at a real butcher and buy produce at the farmers market already. But those items like sauces, mixes, spices, paper products, household goods, personal care - they are just so much cheaper at Wal Mart than the grocery store.

It was discussed on here last week the benefits of Amazon Pantry. I was talking to my wife and she said that we needed several items that fit into the Amazon Pantry mold. I like to research things, so I had her build a "Pantry Box" of things that we needed - 22 items, nothing special, things that most households with a 5 year old running around buy monthly.

I had nothing better to do this afternoon while the girls slept than to actually go to Wal Mart and compare prices.

Here are the results.

Wal-Mart $78.92 + 7% tax = $84.45
Amazon Pantry $79.50 + $5.99 shipping = $85.49

Out of 22 items, 2 were cheaper at Wal Mart (32 oz.brown sugar and kiddie vitamins), 4 were cheaper on Amazon (toothpaste, mouthwash, toliet paper and paper towels) and the other 16 were exactly the same or within two cents.

So, for $1.04, I can avoid crowds, redneck trash, screaming kids and wasting an hour or more of my day. I'm sold. Hope this helps someone that was considering it.

Looks like it's cheaper to go to wal mart and you have your food right away.

Can you post your shopping list? If your staple goods are similar to mine, then I probably don't have to do my own comparison....

Very true. But I really hate Wal Mart and the price difference is so minimal that its worth a shot. Just ordered my first pantry box - it will be here Tuesday.

hmmm…I wonder if I can get my stuff cheaper using Pantry vs Subscribe & Save…I'm already doing S&S for most of my consumables with a 20% discount on those items.

I like the wal mart grocery stores and I always self checkout. It seems to work well and they aren't nasty like big wal marts.

What is the argument? People buy stuff online because it's convenient. Who disagrees with that? For a $1 convenience fee, it sounds worth it.

Note that the difference in the Disney Princess Vitamins was almost $3.00. Take that item that is niche to 5 year old girls out and Amazon is slightly cheaper.

Also, my wife argues that staying out of the store saves us way more than $1 because we wouldn't waiver off the list or have to pick up something extra the child puts in the cart. I'm sold.

Subscribe and Save with the 20% discount is cheaper in my experience. Main reason I haven't done pantry is that most of the things I want via pantry, I get via S&S. The benefit of pantry is the smaller sizes. For me, it is better to do 1 delivery of S&S a month, than a couple of pantry deliveries a month.

I haven't pulled the trigger on subscribe and save because I am scared of the commitment. My product use varies so much that I feel somethings would get stockpiled. Anyone have trouble with that?
