Reminds me a lot of NFL players suing over concussions.

Wall St Journal

Student borrowers say they were deceived about job prospects

quote:

Americans are applying in droves to have their federal student loans forgiven on the grounds they were lied to by their colleges, new figures show.

Nearly 20,000 borrowers have petitioned the Education Department to relieve them of their obligations to repay their federal student loans, according to figures released Thursday by the department. The number has surged since January, when more than 7,000 borrowers had applied for forgiveness.

The borrowers are seeking to take advantage of a decades-old law that cancels student debt for borrowers who prove they were deceived by their colleges. Many borrowers who have applied to the program argue their schools ran advertisements and employed recruiters who cited fraudulent statistics on how many of their graduates found jobs after leaving school.

I get a telemarketer call nearly every day telling me that the government is forgiving student loan debts. I always hang up on them. 2 points I'll make that will sound like brags, but they're not. 1) I make too much money (not a lot, just over the limit for forgiveness im sure) and 2) why would I ask tax payers to pay off a loan that I took out? It's my responsibility.

While I don't agree with free school, the racket that is required school books, fees, and excessive professor salaries should be addressed. Students shouldn't be extorted because they are at "college."

Precious snowflakes can never admit mistakes. Pay back your loans, bitchasses. Go learn a trade, go acquire a skill that's in demand. Just quit whining.

frick 'em. I have student loans, and I'm gonna pay them back. I do wish I could get the lower rate they offer now for federal loans, but c'est la vie.

ETA: Colleges are fairly predatory with how they just give out the max amounts available IMO, but that's still not an excuse.

Colleges also inflate the frick out of the cost of attendance figures that they post.

Worthless individuals. They could've been working 1-2 jobs during school instead of partying. I made it through 5 years of college without any debt so I know it can be done. Why should responsible people have to pay for their college too?

frick them, their ignorance and irresponsibility. You either pay up front or on the back end. Either way, you have to pay.

Do you know how much college tuition is these days? LSU and ULL have "cheap" tuition and it's at $5000 a semester before TOPS. Add rent, books, food, utilities, misc costs and you're talking about $10,000 a semester.

If they get their loans paid off they should never be able to legally associate themselves with the school that they received their degree from (not on resume or mentioned in an application process/interview).

As someone who's been paying a thousand a month on my student loans and going without a lot of shite to try and dig myself out of a hole and go back to school in the near future, this pisses me off a great deal.

While I disagree with paying off student debt, considering that I have over $200k myself, that is no longer possible at current tuition prices. You cannot work enough and go to school to pay off the increasing costs of college tuition.

Your analogy is bad.

The students' foresight is bad as well.
