A 28-year-old man died early Friday morning in a possible alligator attack in Orange, just outside of Beaumont, police said. The last fatal alligator attack in Texas occurred about two centuries ago.

The man, whose identity was not released pending notification of his family, was swimming with a woman in Adams Bayou off Burkart's Marina in the 1800 block of Mississippi Street when police said a large alligator apparently attacked him. Police were dispatched at about 2:30 a.m., and the Orange County Sheriff's Department and a game warden from Texas Parks and Wildlife searched the area with a boat.

C'mon man -Stay out of the bayou at night .

Yeah that is stupid! I'm from that area, and there is a place you can go out there where Cow Bayou meets the gulf, there is an area where water from the chemical plants comes out into the water and it is pretty hot/warm. You can sit there in your boat and see 200 or more gators eating up a storm, it is crazy.

Who the frick decides to swim in a bayou at night? In the south. Dirty water and no light.
My heart goes out to his family because regardless of how stupid he was, they still lost a loved one but damn that was stupid.

I'm not sure I'd go swimming in that water at any point - day or night.

Why do people swim in waters inhabited by gators?

People often forget that they aren't the top of the food chain anymore, once they enter the water

Some of the biggest and highest concentrations of gators I have seen were in and around Orange.

Fully agreed, which is one of the reasons I hate being stationed in South Georgia.

We grew up swimming in bayous and ponds. The closest pool was about 30 min. away at the state park. That all being said, I was a nervous wreck a few weeks ago letting my son swim with the other kids in grand bayou!

I am in the same boat. I grew up swimming in the bayou teche, playing with snake, being out in the woods all day long. Now that I have led away to the city, I am paranoid and the biggest helicopter parent. What the hell has happened to our generation?

Could have been a Bull Shark who swam up the bayou (yeah, they can manage fresh water)
