First time dad here. The little guy is due to be here in late September. My wife and I are discussing baby monitors and she was just going to get a classic non video style with sound only. I tend to lean towards new technology so I would like to maybe have one with video.

My question is this. Is it worth the money to get a video style monitor or is it just a waste of money? I don't know much about this stuff so I don't want to purchase something just because it's cool if we don't really have to get it.

We originally just went with sound/motion monitor. But once we moved our daughter into her crib in her own room (about 6 weeks), we went ahead and bought the video monitor. It helps A LOT.

I would highly recommend one.

We are due with our first in september as well. We registered for the video. If we don't get it at her shower, then I'll probably just bite the bullet and buy the video.

There is no way we would hear our daughter from our room without the monitor.

Worth the money. The cheaper models work fine and are really not that expensive. Trust me, you will want to see what he is doing in there.

Get the video one, very handy to check it from my bed to see if lil man is covered up, sideways, upside-down, etc.

He will also talk a little in his sleep sometimes, without the video monitor, we would have gone in and probably woke him up trying to put him back to sleep.

Congratulations. I think the video monitors are well worth it. We had a non-video one for my daughter, and it was fine, but there is something nice about being able to visually see your little one.

Yep.

If I hear my daughter crying during her nap or in the morning, I check the monitor and if she is still laying down, I know she will just go back to sleep, but if she is standing up, it means just is awake and ready to get out.

Honestly, check out the apps in the apple store. They have some cool monitors and you always have access to it on your phone ..

Video is useful for when they're no longer newborns and you can see what they're up to in their room, if they're napping or awake, etc.

We have the video. It's nice to be able to see him and determine if he is just fussing a little but still has his eyes closed and will probably go back to sleep on his own, or if he is awake and needs something.

Plus, I can stare at that kid all day, so this allows me to do it from the living room or my bedroom.

this too

I leave for work before she gets up in the morning, so I like being able to see her before I leave.

Our house has old wood floors so walking in her room and looking at her is not an option

I just bought a Foscam security camera off Amazon for about $80 and then used a cheap app for my iphone and kindle fire to monitor it. Works great. Very good quality and if you set it up right you can monitor it from anywhere. A lot cheaper than the video baby monitors out there.

We have the video....her room is upstairs and ours is downstairs, so helps to be able to just look in when she is crying
