Additional Troopers to Patrol I-10, other Highways

State Police Superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson said the new patrols, which started Wednesday, will add the equivalent of one full-time officer to the city’s major thoroughfares. New Orleans is reimbursing the cost of the off-duty troopers working the detail to the tune of $200,000 a year.
Troopers will travel both interstates in the city as well as U.S. highways such as Chef Menteur. They are expected to focus on areas where accidents frequently occur.
“The additional manpower helps keep drivers safe and allows NOPD officers to focus on other crimes throughout the district,” NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison said.
The new detail is the latest expansion of State Police presence in the city, where the NOPD is fighting to replenish its depleted ranks. Since March, state troopers also have patrolled the French Quarter and surrounding areas.
An additional quarter-cent sales tax in the French Quarter intended to pay for making the State Police presence permanent will appear on the Oct. 24 ballot.
Since March, Edmonson said, state troopers have answered 1,800 calls for service and made 490 arrests in the city.

I wonder why that is? Maybe its because they have a shite ton of other wasteful spending and redundancy in Nola city budget?

This city is so fricked. I love so much about it, but with housing prices skyrocketing, the increased nanny state, locals willing to raise taxes for things like a shitty/corrupt library system, and generally terrible priorities, I'm less interested in buying a home and staying here longterm.

Sounds like it doesn't have competent leadership, but even then, competent leadership can't do much if it doesn't have good citizens and enough of an educated and competent populace.
Anyway, The state needs to quit artificially propping up Nola after their continued failure to restock the NOPD. I hope Bobby Jindal laughs when he reads a heartfelt but misguided letter on the 4th floor from Mitch Landrieu asking for more State Troopers.

Dam, I grew up just down the street from there. Was once a nice hood till the early 1970's.

This sounds like a money grab. I thought the whole point of bringing the State Police in was to assist with increased violent crime (murders/assaults/armed robbery/etc)?

How many troopers are the adding? More importantly, how many city cops were tending traffic? Seems there is a priority issue here as well.

I said it in a one of those troopers in NO threads awhile back, but LSP has the state by the balls.
The city is the tourism industry for the state and with crime the way it is and the lack of NOPD manpower/presence there's nothing the city or state can do but give LSP everything they ask for. Ie a 20% raise
