Active Duty Members/Veterans why did you join?

I was working as a screen printer at the time and didn't know what I wanted to do. I just knew I didn't want to screen print. My good friend was an Air Force brat and we were driving around one day, when he started telling me about the Air Force. We said frick it, and went down to the recruiter.

The Air Force recruiter took us down the hall to the Navy recruiter, who took us down to the Army. Army said "Hell, we'll take you". Army it was.

1. Family History of Service beginning in WWI
2. College Money (got it and used it. LSU)
3. Seemed to be (and was) a helluva job

Father was an Air Force Officer.

I always loved US Navy Warships.

I wanted to be a photographer and my local Navy recruiter he said he would guarantee that job for me.

Bonus, I thought (and still do) that everyone should serve their country in some capacity for me it was a stint in the Navy.

Became a Coxwain on a 32 ft, open hull volunteered for Nam, got my request, worse/best decision I made. I am proud to have served my a Country fight the enemy and continue to help Veterans today, through my Foundation.

I went to this doctor. Well, he told me I swallow a lot of aggression... along with a lot of pizzas! Ha Ha Ha! Pizzas! I'm basically a shy person, I'm a shy guy. Uh, he suggested taking one these uh, aggression training courses. You know these aggression training courses like EST, those type of things. Anyway, it cost 400 bucks! 400 bucks to join this thing? Well I didn't have the money and I thought to myself, "Join the army"! It's free. So I figured while I'm here I'll lose a few pounds. And you got what, a 6 to 8 week training program here? A real tough one. Which is perfect for me.

Seriously
1. Had gotten off track in school, felt I needed a challenge
2. Flight expenses were killing me needed funds
3. Best thing I ever did to make me understand that we have a commitment to this country as much as it to us.

i pissed away my scholarship and was tired of working turnarounds in the plants.

I joined for a variety of reasons:

- Continue the family legacy of serving.
- Tried college, aeronautics major, found out I wasn't mature enough being 18 to stick it out.
- Hated the lifestyle I was living.
- Wanted new opportunities to further life experience and education.
- Became bored with the financial industry and wanted to do something I'd actually enjoy and have pride in doing.
- The week after I turned 23, I said "frick it, its now or never". Ended up walking into the Marine Corps recruiting office, took the ASVAB the next week, scored well enough to land an aircrew contract. Doing what I originally loved to do, be around airplanes and helicopters.

Always wanted to join.....after a crappy freshman year, i enlisted...

Went back to LSU, did better in school and got a ROTC commission to boot

Turned the GI bill into two degrees and a CPA license

Was in the right place at the right time to make a difference after 9/11
