GEISMAR — A rail tank car leaking hydrochloric acid Wednesday night forced the evacuation of the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, with officials warning residents living within one mile of the site to be prepared to evacuate if winds shift. Ascension Parish Chief Sheriff's Deputy Bobby Webre said said shortly before 10 p.m. that men were suiting up in hazardous materials gear to check out the leaking tank car and determine how easily the leak could be stopped. Webre said winds at that time were blowing away from Gonzales toward the region's chemical corridor and the Mississippi River.

The Expo Center, which was hosting a career fair for the parish school district, was evacuated around 8 p.m. It was not immediately clear which plant was involved or how many people were in the Expo Center.
I was there and nobody told me anything.

Hopefully the leak is not bad and they get it under control quickly. And it's good that it happened at night, and that the weather appears to be cooperating.
In the grand scheme of things, liquid HCl isn't that bad. There are much, much worse chemicals in Geismar.

The tracks are about 3 miles from Lamar Dixon. Its probably mandatory anytime they have a leak in the area they shut it down due to the danger if the wind is not in your favor.
When Williams blow'd up, we used Lamar Dixon as a Triage area after they made us shut down the first 2 Triage areas due to lack of coordination between the parishes.

I'm glad you contradicted yourself so I didn't have to.
Also, people died in the Williams explosion. Maybe there's a better way to refer to a fatal event then the time it "blow'd up"

Too many plants in AP. I would not choose to live there.

Did they overfill the tank car I wonder? All these temperature swings we keep having from hot to cold is terrible for lined piping and flanges (what they use for acid service). The bolts can't be torqued down too much or it'll crack the pipe. So the bolts loosen up easily with expansion and contraction week to week because of the weather.

Don't know much about standards for acid service rail cars, but it could've been a bottom nozzle configuration that had a gasket. Also, there could've been a high level of contaminant that attacked the liner and accelerated the failure.

No... the railroad was switching out cars and punctured a hole in the bottom of a fully loaded HCl car.

Could this be the reason the train at Exxon is stopped? Looks like some folks have been sitting here for over an hour

Nah... that wouldn't hold things up that far down the line.
