AC question. Strange noise.

Home AC is running rough. Lol. Still blowing cold. Just making noise at both air vents. Both filters were dirty but I’ve seen worse so they’ve been changed. Noise persists. Climbed in attic. Sounds normal. The sound does not dramatically get worse when in attic. The pan is not full of water.
Went outside. I knew it wouldn’t be but checks anyway. The emergency drain pipe is not dripping. Blower outside is running and sounds fine.
Symptom is an audible hiss in the air as it’s being pulled in. Maybe even a little rattle? Sounds as though it would be blocked. Like a HORRIBLY dirty filter. But again that really wasn’t the case and I changed them anyway.
BTW. An AC guy will be out Monday. When the coll front blows through I am shutting it down and opening windows. Lol
Just curious to what I may be looking at. Unit was serviced 6 months ago. It’s an old Trane. I believe 1999

1999? You’re overdue for a whole new system.

What did it sound like when the filters were out?

Still there. Maybe slightly less?

You can get a full trane replacement foe less than 10k.

Are your return grilles clogged up, too?

Not the filters then. How's the ductwork look around the returns?

Push on the noisy return grill when the system is running and see if it goes away. If so, you may need to tighten the mounting screws or bend the louvers ever so slightly.

Bump and update questions. Culprit was a boiler/blower fan. Quote for the job is $575. My looking online is about right for the job. A tad high but not crazy.

Where? We've only gotten 2 quotes one for 10k and one over 12k.
I am out in Katy. I see the ads for "$6995 and 7995", but do not know what type of systems these are and brand or Seer Rating.
I have a single large unit on a 2 story house with single furnace in attic. Currently have a Trane. In 1999-2000 Trane was the shite and in 2005-2006 it was still great we never questioned. What are the brands now? Are they like other appliances like washer and dryers where one or two companies make the same shite and put names on them?
Trane?
American Standard?
Carrier?
Lennox?

I have heard York is the best built product these days.

Sounds like the blower fan to me.

Trane and American Standard are the same unit. Just a different brand name on it. Carrier is absolute crap right now unless it's their Infinity line. Lennox is just OK. I'd put a York in my house above any other brand. They're over building their products right now. Absolute strongest, best built units currently on the market. Rheem/Ruud second and then Trane.

ETA: I'm sure this is for "only" the equipment, stat, pad, etc. It won't include duct work and any other stuff they're going to tell you that you must replace.

Sounds like some duct work is loose. Or a piece of duct tape loose.

I have 3 Rheem units at my house which is about 3 years old. One of them needed a coil replaced already (about $1600 job I believe). Thankfully it was still within warranty. Maybe that's just bad luck because most people including the tech speak highly of Rheem.

Are these the old style rectangle units or the new cubes? The new cubes are damn good units.

Anybody can recommmend anyone in Houston and it’s burbs?

If you plan on staying in your current home, I'd consider replacing the blower coil and the furnace and not just the blower motor.

Don't shy away from Goodman products either. Back in the day they were bottom feeders, but since Daikin bought them they're building a very good unit, too.
