AC people? Damn. When you find a good one hang on.

I have a panicked thread on the money board. Dave Ramsey with no emergency fund but starting debt snowball.
Had a "grounded compressor". Seemed cut and dry. Have a home warranty so with big jobs like this they always cry. They gave me options of repair with $500+ out of pocket. Or $1100 cash out. Which is not enough for the repair but I can choose more reputable place. So we looked that route. One guy was just sales really. He poked around but did not give the hard sell. Second opinion guy comes out. Asks where is the breaker. Your compressor may be ok. Turns out it was never broken. A second cord was damaged. This is where AC guys reading can help me. I may be way off. It was power to a compressor heater and thermostat. This wire was shorting out.
So due to incompetence we went from considering changing out everything and dropping 6-7 grand. Now a $120 check. And all is well. We are going to take the cash out price from warranty co. Bastards. We had decided before all opinions but their techs incompetence is not my responsibility.

So have you backed off your opinion that just because the system is 18 years old it is time to replace the whole thing?
Posted on 2/16/15 at 9:27 pm to LSU alum wannabe
so, you are saying that you are gonna take money from you home warranty company under the pretenses that you need it to change the compressor, but you really won't change the compressor?...

Sounds like he's going to accept what they offered and act like a homeowner(stupid).

Yes we performed a system reset on the whole situation. Since the original problem was really not the problem. Emergency fund will be here shortly. Will still get some estimates though I think my 7000 guess may have been high.

Stick it to the man. Nice job.

It is not broke. The call to cash out was made today. We did not want the tech they sent to perform the repair. New guy came and threw the curve that it is not broken. If we get another summer out of it we are happy.

Who is the warranty company?

It doesn't matter. They're all scam artists and the contractors who sign on with them are the bottom of the barrel.

sounds like mostly lingering frustration. All that you learned is probably worth $120, if you had to pay that. It sucks, but you came out well, if I understand your post, which is not easy.

really? ALL scam artists? that's a pretty bold statement - the question wasn't even directed at you cathy so why did you have to jump in? go back to your quilt contest.

I have attempted to discern the specifics of this thread by reading it twice and the first thought that springs to mind here is the OP's need for the following:

It does matter actual. Sadly enough TD.com is one of the few places in the world you can get a decent unfiltered option about companies. Post the name!
In regards to AC people there are a bunch of shady fricks out there. I met a few of these guys out drinking/playing cards a few years back and they essentially laid it out there that they were going in to situations looking to find ways to replace a unit because it was more profitable. So anytime one of them comes in with the "need a new unit" it might be worth the additional service call to get a second opinion from another company.

I believe that is a run on sentence. Regardless, go away grammar police. This is an iPad and a inter webs forum. Not a thesis.

What did the warranty company do wrong?
They paid as promised in the information the ad gave them. I use on company that kicks arse! They also give me the option of finding my own guy if they don't have someone available in my area for the particular issue.
And ti be honest, most of those companies do what they do because of POS homeowners who try to guy them and STEAL by making false claims.....just like the OP.

You wouldn't know a "run on" (sic) sentence if it ran over you.
With this lovely attitude, your prejudice of unknowns and this particular display of your overall decision-making "skills" you will lurch from one economic crisis to the next for the rest of your life. Get used to it.
And it will always be someone else's fault. Ever notice how folks ALWAYS seem to fight against you or be against you? It's them responding to your negativity or lack of honor. In life you generally get back what you send out. Try a little tenderness. Or honesty.
EDIT: A modicum of literacy and coherency in posts is not too much to ask. Your composition skills as displayed here suck.

dare I ask who you use?

I use ARW (in pretty sure that's it). American Residential Warranty.
Something like 45/mnth. $55 deductible per visit. I chose it because it covered everything I need including plumbing to the road.
It's a nice home (250k) and I lease it to a single older guy. Was my personal home until I remarried and I DO NOT want to be a "landlord".
I pay the monthly, he pays the 55 if something goes wrong. He calls them so I'm not stuck doing that.
I will say this, ALWAYS meet the repair guy and be very nice. These companies ask him tons of questions trying to get an answer that voids the claim. Let him know this and therefore he'll help you by making sure he doesn't casually give them the wrong info.
Case in point.....water heater went out.
Guy comes out and meets my tenant as I was out of town. Checks it out and calls back in to company. Company denies the claim because the guy told them correctly that the thermostat was set higher than normal.
What the guy didn't know was that the tenant called me the night before about the low hot water issue and I told them to go up and turn the thermostat higher to get them thru the day until help arrived.......it worked to get them enough to shower quickly.
Once I spoke with the guy, he called them back and told ARW the real story and the accepted the claim and paid the repair total (over $400)
So now you understand why working with the repair guy can give great results.

We have received your claim and are reviewing your request for a cash payout. Thank you for informing us via TigerDroppings that this is in fact a false claim. Our legal department will be contacting you shortly.

quote:sent a guy who was DEAD WRONG on his diagnosis of the problem. I only discovered his incompetence by getting two bids on repair or replacement. The warranty companies offer had the option to pay out of pocket $500 + to replace a functional compressor.
What did the warranty company do wrong?
The wheels were already in motion for the cash out. That money will go toward a replacement. Just hopefully next summer.

Every 3rd claim we have a problem in general. The techs they use are brand new guys (doesn't have to be bad) that are building their business. Or they use older shady techs.
