AC issue. Capacitor likely out

Just want to check my diagnosis. My AC is blowing warm air. Filter is clean. The outside unit was not running when I came home, but after giving it a bit to cool off I ran it again and noted the a whining noise and fan not spinning. When I nudged the fan it started up. Based on this I am guessing its the capacitor, but after a while the fan stopped spinning which makes me think the unit is overheating. Could it be the compressor, or is it the capacitor? Thanks.

Could be a number of things. Fan motor could be out

fan spins freely when i move it, and I don't hear any grinding when I get it moving. Could be giving out, but one would think that if the motor was shot it wouldn't spin on its own at all.

Just replace the cap, those things are like $15 online.

When I had a similar issue it was the capacitor. Like someone said $15 online. Order more than one just because you're going to pay an AC guy $100 to do it today if you have a wife or kids.

when this happened to mine, there was a capacitor the size of a 32 oz beer can that had exploded.

I got one from a local shop.
I think it was ACME refrigeration

a/c units always seem to go out on the hottest days.

My motor blower went out on my car Tuesday. Thank god for Youtube because it only cost me the price of the part. Replaced it myself.

calling around to find the cap. It looks ancient. Landlord not answering of course.

Or you could just get a meter and put it on capacitance and test it....

Run to Coburns and get you a new one.

The trick is that a blown capacitor is typically a symptom rather than the problem.

If you have a voltmeter you can test to see if the capacitor is actually bad.
If it is, do what the other poster said and buy two or three whenever you find one that way it's quick and easy the next time

Does it have numbers on it, something similar to 45/5/440. If so, just get a capacitor with same numbers, it does not have to be exact same capacitor.

false
Mine blew 4 years ago and my AC has been running fine ever since I replaced it.

Symptom is they aren't made like they use to.

just love all the idiots on here saying to order a capacitor online, ya right just wait 5-7 days for it to come in the mail and sweat it out until then roflmfao
go to hardware store and buy one "right now" to fix it "right now" because its hot as hell and you cant wait a week for the mail man to bring you one.
if the capacitor looks swollen, that's an obvious indicator its bad as seen here LINK
if its not swollen it can still be bad so this can help you with testing it LINK
on cautionary note, those things hold juice like a taser and will zap the shite out of you so after turning power off to the unit, use a screwdriver across the terminals to safely discharge and voltage still stored in it

Don't call an AC guy until you change the capacitor yourself. Mine blew one weekend I was out of town and they tried to charge my wife $180 for a new one. Guy was there under 30 minutes.
