re: Abandoned luxury cars all over Dubai

So much bad information in this thread...wow. It reminds me of how dumbasses in other parts of the US think everyone in La has alligators in their backyards and everyone in Tx rides a horse.

I still see him crusing around the Coursey/Sherwood area a good bit.

- Interest is illegal in Islam, hence the user fee based banking. Conservative Muslims actually frown on Capitalism in general, that's one of the reasons that the Osama targeted the World Trade Center.

- The locals consider menial work demeaning, so they import low skilled labor from Asia. You've got a lot of Pakistanis, Indians, and Philipinos there. The conditions range from decent, to abhorrent.

My of my buddies saw a non-native beaten in the streets for drinking a bottle of water - this was during Ramadan when the locals were fasting.

Dubai hasn't been a "booming oil economy" in decades, its been a "booming real estate bubble" for decades.

My father warned me of this before I left for graduate school in Boston. Sure enough, the guy installing my cable asked me if we had alligators in our backyards. Unreal. :csb:

I've seen enough swamp people to believe this is true.

We're moving there soon and have to buy a car. Kinda worries me because what if we can't sell our car once we leave? i'll be wanted in the UAE.

Just came from the Mall of the Emeriates and saw two ferraris and a mazerati (sp?) in the valet line. The mazerati was painted matte black, thought that was kinda interesting

eta- drinking isn't some big secret here, you can drink in bars. they probably have secret strip clubs, at least they do in cairo. even nationals drink in the open here, with asian hookers

I travel a lot with my work and when I'm sitting on a barstool telling unlikely stories I really make Louisiana sound like a psychotic wonderland.

and the cabs are all Camry's. Or you can pay a little extra and get a Lexus. I had one Range Rover cab. It's a little unreal out here, can't say i'm too happy about moving here

TexasTiger05,

My company is considering moving me out there. What's the scene for a single guy in his late 20's?

got some the other night, it was okay but it was delivery. There is a Nobu at The Palm, once we're all settled in we may go check it out. And pay eleventybillion dollars for dinner

I'm actually here because we were evacuated from Egypt, which is where I currently live..well, kinda. Moving here in September.

I'm sure it's hella awesome for a single late twenties type. I'm married with two little kids, so I'm not the best person to ask. Just make sure your moving package is good. Housing here is really expensive, and if your single most compaines give you the least.

dubai is awesome. Imported service workers that make much more working there than at home means that you get excellent service wherever you go. everyone is respectful, nobody walks around with their arse hanging out, alot of awesome sites and things to do.
