I think high performance planes are using serrated edges on the wings to alter shock waves and reduce noise and drag. I guess it has the same effect on the tail end of the engine to alter the shock waves.

Sharks have been doing this for a while now.

I love when nature inspires innovation.

Take humpback whales, for example

quote:

Oh, those humpback whales and their weird fins. First, they inspired more efficient wind turbines. Next, their unique qualities were copied by undersea turbines used to harness tidal flow energy. Now, they've led to rotor blades that allow helicopters to be more maneuverable. It all comes down to bumps along their leading edge, known as tubercles.

Actually, they are very safe.

quote:

0.01
Deaths per 100 million passenger miles in airplanes. Some airline industry executives assert that passengers are now more likely to die in an airport than on an airliner.

0.05
Deaths per 100 million passenger miles on buses and trains.

0.72
Deaths per 100 million passenger miles in cars.

1 in 1.2 million
Airplane flights that involve some kind of accident. The mishaps are not always fatal.

1 in 3.7 million
Chance that you will be killed by a shark.

1 in 11 million
Chance that you will be killed in an airplane crash.

1 in 5,000
Odds that you will be killed in a car crash. "You're much more likely to die getting to the airport than you are flying in the plane," said the editors at Discovery.

What do you think the price tag is on a brand new Boeing 747-8?

Lead time?

I think there's going to be an even bigger version of the A380. Here's a photoshop of it and it looks accurate.

Well I guessed wrong.

I know they do a bunch of stuff with inlet geometry on supersonic aircraft to alter the mach number of the inlet air. I figured this was something similar. I thought I read somewhere that serrated inlets were starting to be used.
