This was the first major divisional engagement of American forces in WWI and helped seal the reputation of the USMC for the next century (even though they were under the command of the US Army 2nd Infantry Division I must point out ).

The Battle of Belleau Wood (1–26 June 1918) occurred during the German 1918 Spring Offensive in World War I, near the Marne River in France. The battle was fought between the U.S. Second (under the command of Major General Omar Bundy) and Third divisions along with French and British forces against an assortment of German units including elements from the 237th, 10th, 197th, 87th, and 28th divisions.[2] The battle has become a key component of the lore of the United States Marine Corps.

Cool to see this, I just got finished reading a book about WW1 in Africa, Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck's story.
Interesting war but overshadowed by WW2.

Everything I know of this I learned from Garth Brooks

Just finished 'Storm of Steel' based on yours (I think) and others recommendation. Quite simply the most accurate account of pure warfare I have ever read. Leaves out the politics , the causes, the monotonous details and is pure grizzly combat and soldier's experience. As a combat vet it brought me back to several places, however, I will never fathom that style of trench warfare and pure bombardment day in and day out all day every day without respite those boys went through...just insanity.

He was a true gentleman and patriot of his country, not to mention probably the bravest man in Germany in the 1930's seeing how he famously told Hitler to "go frick himself".

But Garth taught me this battle had the Christmas truce. Christmas in June? Something's fishy.

The "Christmas Truce" happened in 1914. And it happened on Christmas day, not in June. I think you're confused.

had to look it up. damn..
quote:
During the 1960s, Charles Miller asked the nephew of a Schutztruppe officer, "I understand that von Lettow told Hitler to go frick himself." The nephew responded, "That's right, except that I don't think he put it that politely."

Not to minimize the horror at all, but they learned early to rotate units in and out of the front lines, so that they never spent very long under fire at any one time. IIRC the goal was no more than 48 hours at any one stretch, but I could be wrong about that. And by the end of the war the forward trenches were only manned by observation posts and reinforced only in the event of imminent attack.

One of the last wars where men were expected to (and did) charge lines of enemy cannons and machineguns en masse.
No doubt they protected themselves by pulling their massive steel balls up in front of them for complete coverage.

They learned to walk in single file so the machine guns could only mow down one at a time.

Been there and drank from the fountain. Like the legend stated it added 20 more years to my time in the Corps. Semper Fi.

Chris Gaines was whispering lies into Garth's ear.
