95k combined income enough to live comfortably in the city of Atlanta?

I got an offer there and I'm trying to decide whether it would be a good move. My longtime girlfriend and I would be making about 95k combined income (sorry, but we aren't OT ballers), but I know that the cost of living in Atlanta has risen over the last five to ten years. Neither of us have any desire to live in the suburbs, and the true country seems pretty far outside of city limits due to urban/suburban sprawl.
Could we rent a nice house (not interested in an apartment unit/condo, either) in a good neighborhood on this salary and still have some money left over for savings?
I also have offers in Memphis and Little Rock so far, where money would certainly go farther, but the cities themselves don't have as much to offer.

What part of the city were you interested in?

Atlanta would be the last of those three cities for me...Atlanta sucks...but I don't have any reasons to support that statement.

Not familiar enough with the neighborhoods to say. I would ideally want to live in a bungalow/Craftsman with 1500-2000 sq ft if possible.

I irrationally hate Atlanta, but I still think I'd move there before Memphis or Little Rock.
And I think $95K would be comfortable in any of those places, but I'm not a cost of living expert.

Dependa so much on your life style, that's not a lot for a large city though IMO with no idea about Atlanta's housing market

you're probably not going to be able to afford this in a type of neighborhood that you want without sacrificing other things

Understatement.

You guys should be concerned the most about where your jobs are located and try to live as close as possible. Traffic ain't no joke.

Depends on the type of house/location. What are you looking for size-wise?

I'm pretty sure 95k would allow you to live comfortably anywhere in the south. But I would find somewhere that you could afford on your own if you and the old ball and chain split.

Midtown Memphis is kind of neat. They have some nice burbs too.
Haven't spent much more than a couple of weeks in Little Rock so I can't really judge.
Yeah, Atlanta is not my favorite city. Also, the traffic there is bad enough to steer the OP into house hunting in very specific areas. Really depends on where he's working.

$95K won't go very far when you consider rent, any car notes/student debt, insurance, etc. I doubt y'all would have enough left over for any significant savings.

I currently live in Brookhaven. It's a great area. You may want to look a little less expensive though. (I live with 2 roommates so my rent is way cheaper than yours would be). Maybe Chamblee?
95k would be "comfortable", but you wouldn't be saving much.

This all depends on what part of Atlanta you are talking about. If you are thinking about Atlanta you need to figure out exactly where your office will be before you can truly see what kind of housing options are available. You'll want to be relatively close unless you want to spend valuable time commuting. Do you know where the office is?
A 2000 square foot home to rent in a good/fun area inside the perimeter is going to be expensive. Can you afford $3,000 a month or more? If not, you will probably be looking in less than desirable areas in the city or going to the suburbs. Rent has gotten crazy in the places people want to live.

Does not compute

Would be somewhere in the vicinity of the 75/285 overlap.
Thanks for the tips, y'all. Tough decision but I'm leaning towards Memphis due to the fact that even though the city is a shithole, Midtown is pretty nice and always getting better, and the cost of living is much, much lower.

Virginia Highland
If he truly wants a decent size house (and not an apartment) to rent, he will be house poor in Virginia Highland. The demand and lack of supply in that area has driven rent prices way up there.
