Yes, they need to expand.

Yes, we have the volume and need for this.

No, building a new Airport is FAR more expensive, time consuming, and difficult than renovating an existing airport.

You're welcome.

re: $826 Miliion New Orleans Airport Overhaul Proposed
Just did a little more reading on this and a few things make it seem better (or not as bad) as my first impressions.

1. None of the plans call for new runways, which is usu the most expensive part of airports (obviously there would need to be new runways if they moved the location of the airport).

2. No city taxes would be used on this. Most of the money would be borrowed by the airport against its future revenue, and some might come from the FAA.

I am strongly in favor of somehow connecting the airport to Loyola though.

I would too but with current locations they would need to tunnel. It is easy to get to the GA facilities from Loyola.

I like proposal three.

To be fair, that was my impression too. I am floored to hear that renovation cost $350 mill.

I wonder how much was in some people's pockets? That reno seemingly took forever too.

I like it. Gives 42 Gates, and leaves open future expansion with possible St. Charles runway and Earhart expansion to Interstate.

I'm trying to figure out why they are wanting to build and entirely new complex and terminal when they just finished the D-terminal expansion and rental car facility

Because it's impossible for an airport to not be under some kind of construction at all times.

well. to compete with other National airports they need better concourses. The security screening at MSY sucks. There is no connections between concourses without going through security.

Plus this plan gives much easier access to the Interstate and allows for an expansion of GA uses. Plus could lure Air Cargo. We already have an active port, it could be possible to lure air cargo here.

The price isn't that bad if it won't cost taxpayer money. I also think it would help Kenner spruce up the Loyola corridor.

Do they have the volume for this? Are airlines really looking to expand their NOLA footprint?

I know I can't get a flight in and out of New Orleans on this upcoming Sunday on Southwest Airlines. Not even a return flight this Tuesday either.

Option 2 is the only smart choice. Concourse A & B are shite.

Probably could do something like other big tourist cities. One big airport for international and one for domestic.

Your new N-S runway goes through a swamp, requiring the building of a new U-shaped floodwall/levee and it also crosses the busiest train track in South Louisiana, which cannot be easily moved and cannot tunnel under the new runway due to the fact that its a swamp.

And the expansion of Earhart to the airport isn't happening. That died a long time ago. It's more feasible they they'll enlarge the David/Dickory/Earhart/Airline interchange and upgrade signaling on Airline from the airport to David/Dickory to make for smoother flow of traffic. There's not enough traffic volume to justify extending expressway access and using imminent domain on all of the businesses and homes in the way just to follow the route of an existing highway. All of that is notwithstanding the fact that the expressway leads to the ghetto and doesn't even get you direct access to a desirable destination.

MSY doesn't need another runway, look at places like San Diego, they have a lot more air traffic with equal or less runways. Plus we have two brand mew runways. The security checkpoints and overall flow of the terminal is the problem. I think you could tear out A/B and build a new concourse, then tear down and rebuild C. Use the savings vs a total new terminal to expand air cargo operations.

It brings you to Carrolton, And on to Jeff Davis to the Pontchartrain expressway. It can be very useful for getting uptown and to Old Jefferson.

eta the path I used for the Earhart construction would involve land next to the railroad tracks.

Also the runway stops well short of the train tracks. But there would be an elevated taxiway to clear them.
