Teachers are required to supervise your kids at all times. Obviously someone was not actively supervising. When you speak with the principal, ask to know who was on duty and how any area of the playground can be accessible yet unsupervised.

Find out if the kids parents are educated, usually get things worked out that way. If not tell him to make friends with biggest kid in his grade or some upperclassmen and then beat the shite out of the trouble makers.

No one fricked with me bc i was strong and one of the boys. I went a predominately black school and had friends in every grade i remember my friends beating some 5th graders who were trying to frick with me. Got to have a crew.

I confronted the "attacker" in private and said I'm gonna ask you nicely this time not to touch my child again. After that I'm not gonna ask you nicely and then I'll kick your arse myself. It stopped.

Also teach him self defense.

After I found out that our insurance paid it 100% I decided to move on about it. All I had to do was walk a couple houses down to talk the school Superintendent.

Tell your kid to beat up one of them at a time, when they go to the bathroom. No cameras or supervision in the shitters.

Throw a solid kick in the back of their knee, dunk head in toilet. Commence swirlie.

After one or two of the bullies gets this, the other kids will be scared to go piss or shite and they might piss or shite on themselves, which would be even more classic.

He needs to kick them in the balls, stomp their big toes, elbow them hard just above the belly button.

As for the parents warning about suspension, seriously? That seems like a big deal when you are actually in school, but your kid defending himself isnt worth a suspension? So he sits a day out of school. Who gives a frick. That is not a big deal at all. It's a disciplinary scare tactic. You shouldnt count on a school to discipline your child anyway. This is a life lesson he has to learn, and if he gets suspended, who cares. Use it as a teaching lesson, both good and bad.

Life is what it is sometimes.
Teach him to take care of himself and always be aware of his surroundings.
