Comparisons like this leave me uneasy. For one who cherishes freedom, I don't think I can esteem one soldier's sacrifice in 1945 from one in 1776. I live in freedom today because of them. I am grateful.
+1
This is what we should remember: The spirits and the lives of the people who fought for this country and the ideals that this country are founded upon. Those ideals must be championed and exemplified for future generations to come, regardless of the example. The sailors that fought on the Yorktown were in the same mold as the soldiers that fought at Yorktown.

When I hear of the "greatest generation" (of which my dad was one - joined the USN as a 16 yr old in WWII), I don't think of them as better soldiers, just the sheer magnitude of what they faced
Exactly. It doesn't mean they were better or superior to any generation, before or after them. It is a term used to describe what this generation went through from 1920-1945. No other generation has done that before or after, on that scale. It doesn't lessen or cheapen any other wartime generation.

That's the point! It was their duty. That's what makes those people so great.

For the record, the OP said they were "better men than we are"
All I said was that wasn't necessarily true.
Then the freak out happened

Because it can't be proven. Because it isn't necessarily true.
That's how I know. It's logic.

It's okay bro. People that understand history know what you were saying.
It was just weird timing with it being the first reply in the thread

In some ways they are/were better.

Yes. Very brave people. No doubt. Let's just let this die now.

Big difference.
So it's other generations fault that we haven't had another world war?
Posted on 2/20/17 at 8:51 am to TH03
It's not a very fair comparison to make. That generation grew up in the Great Depression and fought WW2/Korean War and helped turned the US into the world power. Every generation since has reaped their benefits.
If it weren't for all these environmental factors, I don't think there is anything inherently great about that generation.

I look for the good in people also. But to belly up to the bar and take up arms is a whole other concept. I am basing it on what I see on campus today. We ain't got it!

Do you actually think that this bunch of 17-25 year olds could do what they did? Fool if you do. Isolated individuals yes, but the vast majority of are scarred to death of somone just disagreeing with them. Safe spaces.
You don't know that. Just because all the ones needing safe spaces are the loudest doesn't meant the majority of fighting age men couldn't get the job done if shite hit the fan
What about all the ones fighting overseas right now?

I get both sides of the argument here but one thing to ask yourself is this. During WWII it was the norm to go enlist, we've all heard of the 15 and 16 year olds lying about their age to enlist. Hell, a 16 year old won the medal of honor on Iwo Jima. If you didn't sign up to do something for the war effort you were a minority.
Do you really think today's generation of 18-26 year olds would drop school, jobs, families etc to go enlist if something major would break out? We'll always have our volunteers, and thank goodness for them, but I don't think that would be the case today.
Do you think the general public today would ration their sugar and flour, give up their pots and pans so it could be turned into metal? All for the troops over seas?
