Bad visibility + driving too fast on snow/ice = big pileup.

This is one of those situations where I'd be so damn pissed off if I stopped in time but was clipped by another idiot and had to sit there with everyone else for hours on end.

Someone has never lived in the north and driven in snow.

I lived in Cleveland for 10 years and inlaws were a little west of Buffalo NY. We would travel between these two cities quite often. Driving the interstate near the lakes can be very dangerous, especially with lake effect snow.

You're driving in decent conditions and suddenly hit a heavy snow band and complete white out conditions. Think sudden fog without the ability to stop because of snow/ice on the roadway. Large pile ups, while not the norm, happen because people drive too fast for the conditions and don't pay attention to weather warnings.

You see, when water freezes it causes this thing called ice. Ice happens to be a very slippery surface.

Thanks, dumbass. I hate pugs. They suck.

I was referring to 50 cars being involved.

Like someone else said...bad visibility plus driving on icy roads.

You can't see shite...all of a sudden a car comes sliding towards you. You get hit, car behind you hits you. People driving far behind can't see shite, so they don't know what's happened ahead until bam, they see crashed cars, slam on brakes....sliding around and the process repeats itself.

I don't drive in conditions like that on a regular basis and even I can see how this could happen.

My car was parked at Pittsburgh airport's long term parking all week. When I got back, all the snow from the week was accumulated on the car and the wipers were frozen to the windshield. It took me a solid 30 minutes to free them Thursday night by chipping the ice away with a scraper. It was about 4 degrees then and I thought my hands were going to freeze off.

Should be down to about -7 tonight. Not a fan of the winters up here. Even when travel isn't completely miserable, there's enough salt spray on the roads to rust pretty much any car in 5-6 years.

Actually in this case, the state trooper warned the drivers that they could either spend the night in Philly or they can freeze to death on the highway.

Most went with the highway.

Never driven in snow and ice going 50 and had to suddenly hit the brakes, huh? It doesn't really stop you too quickly

we used to pop the windshield wipers up and leave them standing when it would snow out so that way they would not freeze to the windshield.

If it's windy, you run the risk of a snapped blade. Better to be inconvenienced by ice than totally screwed by a snapped/busted wiper blade.
